What I wrote was based on actual - on the street experience during 22 years as an officer, sergeant, then watch commander down here in south Florida from 1973 to 1995 with a hundred man agency in one of the many small cities near Miami - in the height of the "party" down here in Dade (now Miami-Dade) county...
I think that folks considering their own security might want to consider you're just as likely to encounter a threat outside of your apartment - anywhere from your building's parking lot to the front lobby (or other entryway) all the way up the stairs or in an elevator until you reach your own door. At that terrible instant - a good knowledge of all your building's entries, exits, stairwells and other features might just give you a small advantage - and in that once in a lifetime moment it might just make the difference... and that's why I learned to value tactics more highly than any other factor when you're breathing hard and trying to make decisions that might make the difference - all the difference in the world. I've actually spoken with victims who were armed when they were confronted at close range and froze right where they were and were no better off than an un-armed citizen in the moment...
