Just to let everyone know, the local Sam's is having a great deal on Starlight cases. I don't know if it extends to other Sam's locations, but might be worth checking out. My wife just bought a double rifle case with wheels for $25.

Yup, when SAM's started selling them they were going for $116, about half the price of retail for that configuration. Like a sucker I bought 3 of them then. A month or two ago I was at a SAM's and saw that they were going for $43 then. Now it looks like they're dropping again. Sheesh.

IMO, I think Starlight got alotta competition from the more affordable guys like Doskocil in the past 2-3 years and now more folks are jumping in like Hardigg. They are providing equal or better features like wheels, end handles, end latches, etc. for a lot less. I think Pelican will start to hurt too.

In the case for the Starlights at SAM's, the shortcoming of that case is that there are no end latches which is now a most for quality cases, hence the low low price. Trying to get rid of them, hopefully for a newer model with more up-to-date and standard features at a more affordable price so that they stay in business.

Sams started selling them at $~116, but gradually reduced the price at stores they didnt sell quickly enough at. Each case costs Starlight something like $110 to make, so dont expect those prices to stick around forever. I believe the conclusion was that Starlight made a giant run of cases for the military, but the deal got canceled so they were sold to Sam's.

Most Sam's have sold out, but any remaining store that has cases in stock are blowing them out at nutty prices.

Ok, what's a Starlight case and why should I want one? I have a Sam's just a few miles from me.

Trebor:
They are about 1/4" thick heavy plastic cases filled with dense foam that must be cut to accomodate weapons (the weapons cant be just placed in the case, the foam cant squash to accomodate them). They float with a 150+lb guy standing on them using it as a surf board, someone loaded a case with a dozen eggs and dropped it down a 2-story elevator shaft and the eggs were undamaged when he opened the case. When the military transports Barretts, this is the case they use.

Oooh. Fun. Sam's as in Sam's Club, partner of Wal-Mart? I think we've got a local one.

You'll need a SAM's membership to get in the store.

Do a google search, there's a "One Day Pass' floating around that you can print out and use to get in the store. Downside is there is an extra 10% charge on all purchases, or you can join the club for $35/yr.

Oh, there's a reason these cases are called 'Double Rifle Case' instead of 'Quad Rifle Cases'. The cases are friggen huge, and you can lay-out more than one gun per level (there's two 2" thick layers of foam, plus inter-layers of ~1/2" foam to seperate the thick layers), but the case alone weighs 24lb. I've got one case with an AR15A2, an AR15A4 and a 590A1. Its. Very. Friggen. Heavy. 50-60lbs of case and guns doesnt sound like much, but try lifting it up to the tailgate of your truck when the case is 52" long. The wheels are a blessing, I cant understand why they arent included direct from the factory on all cases.

Kharn, all the "one day passes" I've been able to find with google are expired - know of any that are still in-date?

edited to add: just got off the phone with the local Sam's club, and they're $87.61. :( Not as good a deal as I had been hoping, but still about 50% off retail.

RJ, thank you VERY much for the tip on these! I dropped in at the local Sam's Club this afternoon, and they had these cases in a huge pile - $65.61 apiece. Way, way better price than normal retail! I bought two of them.

Also, for those of you who can't find them at your local Sam's Club, ask a manager if he/she can order some for you. I would think that they'd be able to do so at a reasonable price.

FYI: Part of the reason why the Starlight cases at Sams are getting dropped to as low as $45 is because they are close outs. Starlight is not going to sell anymore cases to Sams because Sams was reselling the cases for a lot cheaper than other retailers could sell the cases for, and was hurting the smaller businesses.

Thus, whatever is in the stores is the last of what Sams will be selling. They won't be getting anymore.

Anyone near one of the Sam's Clubs that are selling them cheap wanna buy one on my behalf? I'de buy them all at $25 each!!!! That's a great deal.

Sheldon:
Just letting you know, it costs $30 to ship a case from Maryland to Texas with UPS (I recently sold one).

The family home is in Calvert County (I'm in Newark, DE for school at the moment). Waldorf's Sam's Club is all out of cases for some reason. :D

MY local Sams had em for 65$. They had a big pile of em. I am really interested but 70$ for a case seems too much right now.. Is there a way to talk them down a little bit?

I'd pick one up for $70 if I were you. There are guys hoarding them up and eBaying them for over $100 + shipping. These cases retail for $210 before shipping and without the wheels.

I had to order one from a member on another board (bought it at his Sams Club and relayed + shipping) because Sams Club in California (and Oregon) did not carry the Starlight cases in the stores.

Guys, I did a detailed inspection of the Starlight cases today, and I'm very impressed. They have inserts of high-density foam that you cut with a utility knife (supplied with the case) to fit your guns. The leaflet inside claims that these are for two guns, one on top of the other, each in their own foam cut-out, with another foam sheet separating them. However, I reckon that for non-scoped rifles or shotguns, you could easily fit four in the case, with plenty of foam around each one for padding. Also, if you wanted to do handguns, I'd bet you could get anywhere between 30 and 40 in each case.

The exterior construction is very solid, and these cases come with secondary handles and wheels (an extra-cost option if ordering from Starlight). Starlight's Web price for retail purchase of these cases (product code SC-061352), including wheels, but excluding shipping, is $244.99. I paid $65.61 at Sam's Club, before tax (I guess the tax offsets shipping costs, so I'm discounting both of those factors). This means I paid way less than a third of Starlight's retail price! Talk about a deal! I might just have to pick up another one of these... :D

Alright youve lit a fire under my ???. I am going back today to pick one up. I am goign to keep my eye on them and Ill pick up a second if they get any cheaper.

Now all I need is a rifle worth a nice case like this :D
