I finally picked up the 1909 Argentine mauser I've been wanting for the 9.3x62 build I'd like to do, this will be a nice sister rifle to my 7x57ai arge.
I've always wanted to build a 9.3 just feels right in the mauser action like the 7x57 does. This is a because I can rifle I'll never need the power the 9.3x62 offers, but will make a nice bear or heavy cover gun.

I'd like to give it a safari/germanic look, I am looking at the 23.5" lothar walther cm barrels there $270 would not mind a Shaw but wait time is very long now. Sights I'll probably use necg sights, I'd like a banded front and one flip up or more for the rear. Talley barrel band sling stud. Probably get the same Richards micro fits stock like on my other or one of the safari type stocks, 1" soft recoil pad.

I am considering to drill the base holes 8-40 thread for the recoil, I have Talley bases I'll use and qd rings I've got. I'd like a ruined round commercial mauser bolt handle, I need to see if I can find someone with a tig welder for that. I'll rust blue everything when it's all done.
I'll do some swing m70 style safety think The gentry customs is about $180

The rifle is in decent shape, there's some pitting in the barrel but that's going anyway. Under the wood looked all good the rails are untouched which is nice. The extractor is a tad weak but I may have to mess with it I can get others. Bolt face is very nice.

Before I get the money to start I'll see if I can get 5 9.3x62 cases and a few bullets to test feeding before I buy stuff. This will be a long project but will be fun and worth when it's done.

Sounds like it'll be a sweet build!
If i were punching (having punched) new holes in the receiver id go with 8-40 screws. I dont think theres a real huge advantage in most cases, but might as well.

The recoil isn't that much a bit more then 35 Whalen and 6-48 should be fine but after have the 6-48 break a few times in my 300rum I Mine as well. Most bases should be able to get drilled out pretty easily, I think my buddy has the jig to drill the holes otherwise a Smith may charge $30 a hole.

Cool project, look forward to updates.

Do you recall a quite long build thread by a member who I believe is a Brit expat in Sweden? Maybe in the last six months? Similar build and caliber but I want say he was calling it 360 Rigby? I ask because I recall he had similar design goals and had a lot of pics of inspirational rifles and stocks that might be helpful.

Ya his was a Rigby 9mm or 9.3 I think was a 57 length case I believe. This will be a little more modern, newer express type sights. Limited on stocks since I'm trying to do it as cheap as I can.under 1000 would be nice I can do most of the work.

Some of the stock's I'm thinking. I would like nice figure but don't have the money maybe A grade of the cheaper semi fancy. With the recoil having straight grain in the wrist is a good idea. I haven't ruled out laminate yet, just doesn't feel traditional but maybe better.

Holy cow. A NSFW warning would have been handy! :D

That “Modern Classic”, first above, is properly gorgeous.

please reconsider using a barrel band mounted sling. Good way to vary the vibrations and worse you can never sling up to get an assist as it pulls impact way off ! The 1909 is a beautiful action and should make a wonderful 9.3x62
The feed ramp grinds are miniscule to make a 1909 feed 30-06 perfectly , Many of the 1909 were converted from 7.65 Mauser with zero problems feeding 30-06 ..

This one is already a 3006, and there will be no front sling stud on the stock, most time it will be carried without a sling anyway. Front sling stud with the recoil and a round forearm are asking to hurt my fingers.

I thought it was a 30-06, I had one just like yours till recently. I included it in a swap . it was this trucks "truck gun" I miss it but wouldn't go past putting on a 9.3x62 Loathar barrel like you are . Maybe drill and tap 8x40 scope base holes for a quality German piece of glass.

I think Sears did a bunch of these way back, there all the 09 Argentine to. I'll shoot this but don't expect much the bore is pitted pretty good but never know. I'll probably use a 1-4 leupold or similar they have good eye relief, and is about the most I can afford for a scope. Wish I had the money to order the barrel but have to save up, like I said a long project lol.

Shot mine for years with the converted 7.65 barrel with a .310 bore ! It was as accurate as I could use the sights. I filed the rear sight a little wider and deeper to sight it in at 50 yards dead center with GI Garand ball. It shot 3" with that combo at 100 and I got about 8" at 200 from the bench, good enough !

ya I've shot a bunch with the bigger bore and had good accuracy but the pitting is pretty bad the rifling is strong tho. 4-5 inch group at 100 yards tho will be fine e for most hunters.

Neat project, cant wait to see the final product!

What, no Schnabel forend? Blasphemy! :D
Don't know yet on a Schnabel, depends on the stock I get. I'd do a Kidney shape check piece of I do, I like the look and feel of the round forend and ebony tip as well. Some day I'll do a very German gun, probably a mannlicker, raised panel stock sides, kidney check, belt grip. Not sure what cartridge for that yet.

I've never built a rifle, don't know much (anything) about aftermarket stocks, so surprised the laminate stocks cost more than the solids.

Good luck with your project, sounds like it's going to be a nice one!
Thanks, the laminate stocks from Richards are priced pretty well. I never could see how boyds gets so much for there's, there's are pretty ugly to me and are soulless.

Agree. I don't want to hurt anyone's feelings, but to me most laminate stocks look like fancy plywood, new Python grips included.
