No experance with a AR in that caliber, but SKS and AK's. The ones I have shot ran well on

Golden Tiger

Wolf Mil Classic

My personal preference if for the GT. lacquered case and sealed primer and bullet. While not X39 I have shot some Monarch in 308Win and liked it also.

I use Tula and Wolf in my 7.62x39 AR. Just shot it a few weeks ago with Tula. Like a poster mentioned, if you have lite primer strikes you might need to upgrade you firing pin and spring. I had maybe 2 lite strikes in 60 rounds the last time I went out. I do keep my 7.62x39 on the wet side. It seems to help the stuck case issue which happens with steel in an AR every now and then.

MY SKS's, AK's and Ar15 all take the cheapest ammo i can find. Brand and type does not matter. They all seem to shoot the same for me. Tho i am around 100 yards.

All Russian brands work quite well in my imported AKs.
In about 2,500 rds. used in the Maadi A.R.M., one round caused a stovepipe jam. I can't remember whether it was Tula, or "Wolf" (this is repackaged in CA, after importation), possibly Monarch.

My other AKs plus the Czechpoint VZ-58 (no-it's Not an AK...) have seen much less consumption.

In my opinion, as long as you buy enough for practice and a decent reserve--this is the priority.
Which modern brand it is should not even be a factor, in these crazy times with so many possible anxiety factors overlapping. Staring at nonstop, graphic tv news has caused so much of this.

I have an old SKS I bought for $75 in the early 90's. Given the accuracy that the rifle has, it doesn't matter what I feed it. In other words, it doesn't shoot well enough to to a comparative analyzation of shot groups from 1 ammo type to another. But it does shoot every time.

I'm looking to buy some steel-cased 7.62x39 ammo shortly.

This will be for both an SKS and an AR.

There seem to be a number of brands at least theoretically available to be found.

Whose do you like and why?

I've had really good luck with Golden Tiger and Academy's Monarch.

My AR really does well with Monarch. This is a 200 yd. target and the bull s about 12"-

It's not what I like but it's what the gun likes.
My AR 47 likes the Wolf Black box. The many AKs I own love anything I put though them. The AK is like a extremely faithful dog, no matter how many times you throw the stick they always bring it back. The AK just loves to be shot.
My SKS is picky it likes the Barnaul heavy gr Soft point.

I've had good luck with the various permutations of Wolf, i.e., Military Classic, Poly, and even their brass Wolf Gold.

Tula came out with steel ammo with copper bullets, so cheap ammo that's indoor range friendly, and it also works well in my SKS. Before the shortages AIM Surplus was selling a 100 pack for $11.49.

AIM still has brass Geco Target for $7.99 if anyone needs ammo.
