I read a comment by member;darkwing in another thread,"first mossberg need some help" That you should not shoot steel, slugs, or buckshot through collet style chokes (Poly Chokes) I've never heard of this. I've known people who have shot all three at one time or another with no apparent ill effects. I would like to hear some theory's on why this is bad. :scrutiny:

I've shot steel, buck and steel in mine with no harm done. The only damage I've seen on another gun is a couple of pieces blown off the collet. The owner of that gun said high velocity steel BBB. He probably had it screwed down to full choke . On the other style with the ported holes and gap to the choke tube the people watching me shoot could see sparks flying. Cutts compensator was the name.

The newer model Polychokes and Truglo choke devices are certified for steel shot. Best devices ever made for us shotgunners. IMHO.

Reason for concern

The reason this caused concern with me is because an occasional duck hunting buddy uses a Ted Williams 300 (esentially a Winchester 1400) with a factory variable choke. I know personally that he never adjusts it tighter than modified and mostly uses it on the detent between Mod and I/C the largest shot either of us shoot on duck is #2 steel. I wanted to be sure that I'm not setting just to the left of a potential "Frag". Does this practice seem safe enough? or should I raise a red flag? :what:

Talk to a gunsmith. Personally I love the polychoke and would hate to ruin it. So I just went to the local pawn shop and bought a used 28'' mod barrel fer 35 bucks. Last yr I bought a 1400 win barrel for 50 bucks with a screw in choke tube installed.

I wouldn't screw down an adjustable choke past Mod with steel. Usually Mod is plenty of choke for steel, which patterns tighter than lead.

chas08,

I would say that darkwing is mostly correct since Poly-Chokes were more popular when guns all came with a fixed choke.
