Yah, I saw that. I like Steven Colbert and Jon Stewart, I suppose from back in my liberal college days - they are genuinely funny and often fair enough to poke at both sides of the political spectrum, but sometimes I have to fight back my anger and watch them say or do something really stupid.

This was one of those segments. Without actually addressing any of the issues, they just bring it up then lampoon gun owners and gun ownership in general.

I was disappointed, but I didn't really expect anything better, so I guess you take it for what it's worth. Still, the ignorance and elitism of the liberal perspective really shined through in that segment. Perhaps Colbert isn't always aware which side he is mocking most effectively?

Besides just about pointing a gun at his own head with his finger on the trigger, he also totally missed an opportunity to talk about the terrible threat of bears in National Parks. But that would have required saying something good about guns. I do like Colbert, but this piece could have been done a little more fairly and still been funny.

tigre,

Yah I forgot about that - he must have done it a dozen times, and I cringed every time I saw it... you know sometimes I think that liberals exhibiting poor gun-handling techniques on camera (like Colbert, or Feinstein sweeping a crowd with an AK47 with a mag inserted (unloaded - who knows?) and her finger on the trigger) is intentional to reinforce the public fear of firearms. People think "that gun could just go off!" and being handled like that, it's alot more likely that it would...

Sometimes I wonder if people always handled weapons in a careful, respectful manner on film if the perception of guns would change somewhat.

Of course, that's not what those on camera want.

I wondered when someone would bring this topic up on THR.

Sweetness:D He brought out Sweetness once before on the show when he was talking about the Heller decision.

Sure Colbert may have been poking fun at gun ownership but I did found it pretty funny nonetheless. Sure Colbert and Stewart may seem too liberal at times but I still have a sense of humor and can get over it.

I think it's ignorance, not intentional.

Oddly enough, those who dislike or fear firearms often seem to have no respect for what they can potentially do when they are handling them.
Those who do have respect for firearms often don't dislike or fear them.

If your gun safety training solely comes from the movies, you tend to pick up some very bad habits and prejudices about firearms, and mimic what you've seen.

I'm guessing our esteemed moderator forgot to click "CLOSED", so i'll take me a shot...
(quote) " they are genuinely funny and often fair enough to poke at both sides of the political spectrum"
Colbert maybe, but Stewart is rarely within a million miles of fairly taking a poke at both sides.

Agreed, Mil-Dot. Unless there's an interview I want to see, I generally can't abide The Daily Show. I remain a Colbert fan however, mainly because of the stylistic differences in humor. He's not a close friend of 2A; however, the guy's a satirist and an arguably good one. IMO there's a difference between a satirist poking fun at gun owners and Diane Feinstein waving an AK wantonly at a press conference. Whether you find Colbert's commentary funny is one thing, but a gun grabbing senator he ain't.

If you notice, theres a rifle in the background on the wall.

And he began to index his finger alongside the trigger after a minute or so. Someone might have given him a heads up and he remembered, but it's not ingrained yet.

Wow, what an anti. He didn't take any of these issues seriously. Any uninformed person is going to get get a bad message on the issues that he is talking about.

All I got from that segment is that guns are for liquor store robberies and shooting innocent people. I'm pretty angry after watching that.:fire:

Which brings us back to:
I'd rather re-read War and Peace than watch these fools.

Now you know what to do.

Sometimes I think we are a little up tight about things like this. I found it watchable and even laughed a few times.

Of course he didn't take the issues seriously, he never does.

It's not a news broadcast, its satirical comedy. If you don't find it funny than don't watch it.

I find it entertaining. But I also agree that this sort of BS can be damaging to the gun community.

Agree. That's why he's an idiot and not worth watching.
You up late in Turkey,Combat!
Get some sleep.

Ya think?
I used to be constantly amazed at how some folks don't get (much less) appreciate satire, but that was a looooong time ago!

Actually, I thought he made (or more accurately, allowed) Paul Helmke look to look pretty foolish in the Better Know a Lobbyist segment.

Sure there were a few lines picking on gun owners (they typically nail every side), but the majority of the segment made the gun control lobby look pitiful.

'Course, as seems to be the prevailing attitude 'round these parts, if you can't laugh at yourself, at least make fun of others? :D

I too detest both of these guys, though after watching a few shows I intially thought they were really great.
Now I cringe when I hear the show starting and hit any damn channel to get rid of it fast.
Not to get too far off topic, I was shopping in Sam's Club last week, the young female cashier who had just moved to Arizona from New York started complaining to me about all the nuts she meets in Arizona who are openly carrying guns and concludes by telling me this gun carry problem is "The Problem" in my state of AZ. In a rare display (for me) I managed to keep my mouth shut and slowly turn to show her my IWB holster with my Steyr in it, which I carry openly every day.
I made it to the exit without bitching, but when the receipt check lady came up I let loose on her. She seemed very upset that this young upstart from New York (they don't have any problems there) was pissing off the clientele.
She may be coming soon to an anti-gun Costco near you!

I couldn't agree more. Some people need to just lighten up and have a good laugh once in a while. Like I always say, I have friends and family who are liberal with anti-gun views and it doesn't stop me from enjoying their company. The same can be said about entertainers, just because you don't agree with their views doesn't mean they still can't be entertaining.

Just my ¢2, now I'm going to leave before things get rough in here:uhoh:
