Stevens 200 rebarrel???

I have a stevens 200 in .223. This is the short action. Someone told me these rifles could be easily rebarreled. IF this is as he suggested a do it yourself job, how is it done??? I know the bolt or bolt?head would have to be replaced. If this story is legit, could I convert this rifle to a .308?? I do know better then to start a project like this without getting other viewpoints first. Thanks.

You need a .308 barrel with finished chamber threaded for the savage barrel nut and a wrench to remove the nut. You also need proper bolt head and magazine assembly. You need a vise and some method of headspacing. The only part I'm not certain of is the magazine fit, I haven't had my Stevens out of the stock yet. It doesn't make any sense to for it to have changed, but you never know.

If you were planing on using a factory grade barrel, I'd have to agree. I brought my Stevens home for less than $220. If it meets all your needs as is, getting another one would certainly be cheaper.

I'm considering rebarreling a Stevens to a .280 Rem. Would I want a 30-06 or .270 for the donor - or is bolt head the same for all three?

The Stevens is a nice way to buy an action where you are going to eventually replace the stock, the trigger and the barrel, but have a working rifle while you're doing all of this.

The bolt face is the same for .270, .28 and 30-06, but unless there is something you really like about the Stevens, I'd spend $200 more and buy a Ruger or Remington already chambered for .280.

Well, the Stevens is basicly the Savage 110 w/o accutrigger. So parts are plenty, affordable, and one can do a good portion of the work themselves. Kind of a build up project...

I'm already in process of buying a Remington 700 SPS in a 7mm-08. Remington only seems to chamber one rifle in their own .280, go figure.

The Rugers are some very nice rifles, but a little pricey for home tinkering for the novice... and besides, you guys won't laugh as much at my dumb questions...

That's pretty much where I got the idea... I've always been a tinkerer, but I also known when to, and when not to... I've always wanted to do my own build up of a rifle... should be fun, and hopefully, get some decent performance out of it... and what better way to learn than doing it... and of course having a knowledgeable forum such as this one to help you out of a jamb...
