My dad has an old Stevens Favorite that's been in pieces for many years. I think it's complete, but I haven't seen it for a long time. I decided to restore it to it's former glory for a winter project. He's going to find it for me and I'm anxious to get started. I've always loved the design of these guns and the modern reproductions just don't do it for me.
I don't know specifically what model it is, but it's a .22 and has a full octagon barrel. He tells me the barrel has been reblued at some point in the past but I don't know what shape it's in now. If the bore is in bad shape, should I get it sleeved, or does anyone know who could make me a new barrel?
It's either missing a buttplate or didn't have one. I thought they all had buttplates but I'm no Stevens expert. I hope to be able to get a buttplate from Wisners if it should have one.
The receiver is either in the white or the case color is gone. I've seen other Favorites that had color cased receivers, so I'm assuming this one should have it as well. Can it be color case hardened again? If so, any advice on who could do it?
He has the stock and forend and I imagine they'll have to be refinished. What kind of finish did these have when they were new? If they're in really bad shape I might just have new wood made.
I don't remember it having a tang sight, I will add one. Would a Marbles tang sight be correct for this gun, or did they have some other make of tang sight back when they were made?
I know restoring this gun will be more expense than what it's worth in any collector value but I don't mind. It's not about the money. I appreciate whatever help anyone can give me, thanks!
