I think I am going to make my first purchase with my C&R license. I was thinking about getting the Steyr M95, mainly because I can get it for $90. Anyone know of any good deals on affordable ammo and can you reload 8X56R?

Also I would like to know your experiences with this rifle and see your pics if you have any.

i have one, i dont shoot it enough to reload..there is some ammo out there if ya hunt for it..it is a great rifle..does have a little kick to it

I saw one at Big 5 yesterday for $79, and the guy at the store said "good luck finding ammo for that"....so I bought a $79 Mosin-Nagant instead since I have tons of ammo for my Mosin #2. ;)

If you want a straight-pull as a shooter, go for the K31. The M95s are good looking for surplus rifles, but they aren't as good of a shooter... and they do pack a punch. Not to mention the ammo costs are high, and you probably won't shoot it all that much.

It's also obvious when you work one that the K31's design is far superior.

There's actually quite a bit of surplus floating around for it... because most people don't shoot it regularly. You'll shoot 10-15 rounds a range session, tops. Why? Because it has an incredible kick to it. It's a cute little gun though and the first gun I ever owned.

Yamato, can you point me in the right direction to find some?

Also, what shoots 5.45x39 FMJ? It seems I can get 1,080 rds for about $120 and that seems like a really good deal to me.

A Romanian WASR-2 or a Polish Tantal are the only cheap-ish options on the market.

Saw a huge crate of it at the gun show last weekend...so...there is ammo for it. Didn't bother to remember the price, i do not own a rifle chambered in it.

I picked up one of these a couple years ago but I don't shoot it very often because ammo is so hard to find and so expensive.

I paid $175 for mine and it came with a bayonet and 250 rounds of Nazi ammo on stripper clips. I still have about 220 rounds left and I'm honestly reluctant to use it up. The gun is pretty fun to shoot and when you chamber the round you get that somewhat familiar ping like you do with a Garand.

Here's a couple pics of mine....

Any gun show will have the ammo. There's Nazi Surplus, Czech Surplus, and Hornady makes new ammo for it. Seriously, if you can come by 500-1000 rounds of the ammo, that'll last you quite some time. You can almost guarantee that if you see one for sale at a gun shop that whoever traded the gun in, probably traded in the ammo too, because 8x56 ammo only works in that gun.

Not so. At the show in SLC last weekend, there was not one box to be found.

If you find some, buy it. If you find a good source, let me know, 'cause I want some, too.

I've heard that Prvi Partizan will be producing the ammo and selling it under their own name (in addition, I suppose, to the Privi Partizan ammo sold under Hornady's name)...

Supposedly, it'll be cheaper than the Hornady 'branded' stuff...

I guess that we'll see what we see...

Ammo's available from Privi, Hornady, and (soon, if not already) Wolf Gold. Surp's a buck a round. The carbines are pretty nice, but they kick like a sonofa.

I remember way back, maybe 2-3 years ago a local shop was selling 8x56R ammo for something 5/6 cents a round. The en bloc clips were included. They had about 1000 rounds and if I had known what it was I would have bought it. I'd be a rich man nowadays.

Personally, the ammo costs are about the only thing keeping me from getting one of these carbines. I've seen a few around that are cheap and in good shape.

5 years ago these rifles were everywhere but ammo was not.
2 years ago it was impossible to find a M95 but ammo was cheap and readily available.
A year ago, M95s everywhere again, but no ammo.

I've had my m95 for a year or two but still haven't shot it. I'm just too cheap to buy some Hordany.

Varrok, when did Wolf say they were going to make 8*56r? I'd be interested in some.

Graf's has Prvi Partizan brass $40/100 and Hornady 205 grain Jacketed bullets sized .329" $30/100. A set of Lee dies costs about $26. I just got my M95 from SOG today and am waiting for the dies.

Thanks for the heads up. Have you calculated about how much your paying per round reloading vs. what you pay in retail?
