Getting very confused. Just received nice M95M Steyr mauser. But am confused about cartridge size. From what I read, 8MM, 7.92x57 and 8x56R are compatible.
Could use some advice on which of those is/are correct.
Thanks,
Bob

If it's an M95M, it should be 8mm mauser, 8x57JS (or IS), or 7.92x57, all of which are the same thing. 8x56R isn't compatible. It's a rimmed cartridge and has a slightly larger bore diameter than the others.

I've still got to get me an M95 of some sort. I don't have a straight-pull yet. Unless you count the Marlin 60 that doesn't cycle every time with some ammo. :)

If the bottom of the magazine is solid, and when you open the action you see sheet metal feed lips at the bottom of the receiver just under where the bolt slides, you have the 8x57 model. The more common 8x56R version has an opening at the bottom of the magazine where the clip falls out when empty. The cartridges are completely different and cannot interchange. The M95M designation also appeared on some early model M95 rifles in 8x50R caliber that were modified to take the 8x56R cartridge in the 1930's, so you can't go just by the markings.

The above is correct. For future reference, typically when folks say 8mm Mauser, they were referring to the 8x57 (also known as the 7.92x57JS).

The 8x56R is a different cartridge altogether.
