Rural, far beyond the beltway, Northern Virginia,
I took a trip to Clark Brothers' this morning in order to get some large pistol primers.

CCI $44.95 ... OUCH!

The only pistol powder that I saw was 800X (IIRC, $32.95). Seeing that made me chuckle because I am currently using up 2 old cans of 800X both of which sport Clark Brothers price stickers for $6.95. :)

It was good to see all of these high prices. Now I can start seriously considering a decent-sized propellant order that will dilute the required additional HAZMAT Fee.

$47.33 OTD ... WHEW!

Look around. There is no reason for them to be that high. Some stores have them here for $47, some for $35. Just depends on how much they feel they can get from you.

The shops farther from major roads out here have lower prices.

Fortunately, we as individuals do not get charged an inventory tax.

I have been making sufficient sized mail orders to spread out the hazmat fee for some time (5-6 years). I buy larger quantities less frequently these days.

Local stores in my parts do not carry squat. Stores like Bass Pro (Cabela's, whats that:)) are too far away and they have always been fond of their components. Big cities with adequate infrastructure and real gun shops are also too far away.

Fortunately, there is a powder/primer vendor that usually comes to the local gun shows. He usually has a reasonable supply, but not always what I am looking for.

But, 44 plus dollars for primers seems a bit steep even in todays supply situation.Must be old stock that the store bought at inflated prices and they are trying to still get their money back on them.

Clark Bros was ALWAYS high. even 25 years ago. :) Try the shops in Manassas, Chantilly or Herndon to see if they carry reloading kit. I could swear that Chantilly does.

I was able to get an 4# jug of TiteGroup there about 4 months ago when nobody else had pistol powder in stock. $84 or $21/# which seems to be the new going rate for powder these days.

If you are ever in Pennsylvania, King Shooters Supply tries to keep their prices in-line. Picked up 1K of CCI-500 SPP for $30 and 1lb. of the new Hodgdon CFE Pistol powder for $23.95. Large pistol primers were $31.50.

I have been going to Clark Brothers for ~50 years ... and, yes, it has always been a bit pricey. I do not begrudge them that because they are a wonderful shop and a landmark 'round here. It is one of those places where it behooves you to know the local market prices and look for the few good deals.

I knew going in that it would be a bit on the 'spensive side ... but I also knew that the primers were in-stock (unlike a few other local places) ... so I rolled a Clark Bros LookAround (I like doing that every few years) and also a TrashRun (I pass right by the main Fauquier County trash/recycle facility) into the trip. Efficient, sorta. :)

I also got a chance to handle a Glock 30S (SF, actually, but I was interested in the grip-size and how it feels) and so I can move forward on acquiring one of those.

Just what I need, another gun. ;)

Now I must look into sourcing a few (hopefully) flavors of pistol powder online ... but I realize that I may only be able to find one (or two) of the ones that I seek and buy enough to spread that bloody HAZMAT Fee.

I once paid $50 per K for CCI-250's back in 2009. I only did that once, and have since been able to find them at $35 or less, for any size CCI.

Typically CCI large pistol are in the $30 to $32 price range around here. WLP is about the same. Heck Cabela's is running CCI 300 out at $31.99, that $44.95 is pretty high.

The LGS close to where I work has primers for $40.00. I go there all the time, try to buy something once in a while, have bought a few guns from them - so they know me. I politely told them that I could go to the local gun shows, pay the entrance fee, buy a box of primers an still have a dollar left over. Didn't seem to phase them.

On the other hand, I did find a 4lb container of Titegroup there for $86, when no one else had any. They haven't historically carried reloading supplies so I guess I can't complain.

My main source of hazmat materials so far has been the local gun shows, where the prices for the most part have not been too bad. The going rate for most pistol powders has been around $28, but appears to be on its way down. Primers for $30-32.

Since I got back to reloading about five years ago I have never seen primers in this area for less than $5 per C.
I normally buy from Powder Valley but they were having trouble staying in stock.
Got an ad from Midway awhile back and it included a $45 discount on orders over xxx dollars. My last order from them for CCI SPP was $28.60 delivered to my door for 15K.
I have never bought cheaper than that during the past five years.

There is one LGS that never ran out of propellant or primers---at 3X the going price elsewhere they never had to replace inventory IMO. Locally the primer prices seem to be in the $31-$33 per K range for CCI, WIN, REM brands as of late. Some pounders of pistol propellant starting to show up here and there as well. Hoping for back to normal soon.:D

The local Cabela's was up to $39.99 for lg & sm primers.
But I see they're on sale right now.
If they aren't local, even with the Hazmat Fee, buy a brick or 2 & it's still cheaper than $45

Some places I've been lately have 1000's, but only allow buying buy the 100 packs at 4.49 - 4.99 each. Buy all you want, but price stays high. At least I am seeing them on the shelves. Thats a good thing.

Unfortunately I am
Having the same experience with my local shop. The owner bought into several cases of primers when the price was still high. He now has CCI SPP for 41.99. I buy them at scheels for 29.99. He can't understand that in retail the value of your goods can easily change as they sit on your shelf. I will not pay that price, and from the looks of his shelves no one else is here either.

I just bought 10k primers (5k LRP & 5k LRMP) online and after hazmat, shipping....everything, the price was $26.00/k.

I agree, that $44+ price is way out of line.
My "local" Cabela's has the same price on CCI-300 primers, $31.99. They also have Winchester, Federal and Remington LPP for about the same price, I think a dollar or two more for Rem.

The shelves are overflowing with primers of all flavors at the Hamburg, PA Cabela's.
