First if this has been answered before and I missed it.......Excuse Me.

When I was a motor officer with 54 wheeled vehicles and a track assigned, I was provided with a stocking list on most likely needed parts on each type of vehicle. My arms room had such lists available in the Tech Manuals at one level or another. I was allowed to have a certain number or value of replacement parts on hand and so chose the most likely to need replacing.

So what parts are MOST likely to go bad on and 1851 through 61 COlt revolver?.

If I could only stock five replacement parts what should they be?

Has anyone ever posted a listing of parts by the likely hood they will need replacing from highest probability to lowest?

and yes I asked this a year or so ago.

Hand and hand spring
bolt/trigger spring
These are two of the most common failures.
You can buy a better bolt/trigger spring that does not break as easily.
I keep a bolt on hand
Hammer spring may be good to have on hand.
Most parts are just two days away, order from DGW and they get here quick.

Cabelas has a parts kit available for about $25. Includes hammer, trigger, and most other spare parts, but not screws. Same kit is available for Rems. VTI has screw kits for both Rems. and Colts.

Hand/spring assembly
Trigger/bolt spring
Nipples
Bolt
Wedge (Colt) or Mainspring (others)

In that order.

When you aquire these parts keep in mind that some of them are not a drop-in sort of thing. They usually require hand fitting. To a degree you can use the broken part as a model, but if the original part wasn't correctly fitted the new one probably won't be either. If you know how to fit the parts that's fine, but if not you might want to have a gunsmith (if you can find one that knows what he's doing) fit the parts to your revolver in advance. That way if you need them they will just drop in.

Gret info guys. Others are welcome.

That Cabelas $25 kit sounds like a good deal compared to ordering stuff sepperately. I must look into it.

Now which pile is the Cabelas catolog in?

Bob, first let me apologize for offending you yesterday. If you look at the pic of the replacement spring in this kit you will see only one "hump" on each leg, and coupled with your description, hump pressing against bolt, leg too long, Oh never mind...... Anyhow, here's the link to the kit.

best advice i can give you. purchase the parts. then match them up to yours and hone them down until they are interchangeable with yours. then put them in baggies and label them. then you will have a parts kit for each of your revolvers. i actually bought a nice tackle box a fishing one. and labled the tops of them. with the replacement parts and nipples so if i need them they are all set up ready to go

Cabela'a parts kit

I bought a Cabela's parts kit some time ago - just to have some spares.

I recently bought a used Pietta 1861 that had a bit of corrosion and a hair trigger to go along with it. The hammer and trigger dropped right in without any smiting whatsoever.

I subsequently re shaped and case hardened the trigger sear and hammer full-cock notch, and now I have a full set of spares again.

The Cabela's kit is a bargain. By the way, it came in a package with Pietta labeling.

whosyrdaddy,

Not affeneded , just teasing you.

I see the pictured kit is for a Remington 1858-63 so Cabella's messed up. The trigger spring on the colt models is flat and the bolt side has a hump.

Thanks mensly for the link, I went to their site and cold not find it.

elswhere I found the kit as sold by Pietta listed at $59 so thanks again!

The parts kits are only in the "Shooting" catalog, not the big book. The number for the Rem kit is: XZ-21-4052-885 The Colt kit is: XZ-21-4052-884
If you have the shooting book, the kits are on the two pages of revolvers.
