Stockpiling components

I use Rem BR 7.5 Small rifle primers and they could not be had a couple years ago, but my brother had a stash and generously shared until the supply improved. It is still a popular primer that is usually in short supply at my Cabela's in KC. Last time I looked, they were selling them by the 100 for $6...no thanks. I buy them from a local guy who sells for a more reasonable price...last time was $31 per 1,000 (when he has them). I know I could use cheaper primers, but I like these. I had great access to Hodgdon powder for a couple of years and bought Benchmark and Varget for $80 for 8 lbs. That is of course ridiculously cheap and I bought all that was available and I could legally own. But, those days are over now (sigh). So the take home message from me....buy it when it's cheap and let the quantity be dictated by your shooting habits. For about 5 years I was taking 4-5 prairie dogging trips each year and shot 1,000s of rounds. That's why I was buying in 8lb jugs. Was also buying for my shooting companion, my brother. I rarely get stampeded into buying anything. I usually have 4-5 lbs of powder and 2-3K primers. My brother usually has twice that but he shoots more than I do. It can also depend on when you have the cash. I have passed up bargains because I was saving for something else..like another gun. Just got back into Sporting Clays, so I'll be looking for deals on shotgun shells. I never have enough money to buy everything I want...life is just so unfair:)

I believe that prices started climbing on components in relation to the escalation in the middle eastern war effort. I believe those companys had purchase orders from higher up and needed to fill contracts first before making 'excess' available to the public. Now that the war (demand) is simmering down, I expect prices to fall further as (supply) is increasing.
