On the road again
Fellow citizens and firearms enthusiasts.

Not long ago I realized I had to stop complaining online about the many attacks to our constitution and actually do something about it.
It is not just our right to keep and bears arms what it is a stake here but much more. Clear violations of the first amendment are happening right in your town.

I know about the many active efforts by many good citizens to regain our liberty that slowly but steadily has been eroding. Politicians of both main parties have been using the firearms rights and its constant struggles to fill out their agendas.

In the last two years I became increasingly unsatisfied with my previous "passive" attitude and I realized that before things got worse I needed to help, I needed to act!. Before I used to criticize violations of our first and second amendments but I didn't actually do anything about it. Basically I just complained about it in the hope somebody would do something. Well, if we all did that then nothing will change in the end.

I have been doing much thinking and I came up with a several ideas that can be easily adopted and implemented by anyone to help us recover our rights.

Please do not come to any quick conclusions and read below. I have not political interest or affiliation. I am doing this in good faith and I will be looking for ideas from many of the smart people in this forum.

With these ideas below I provide some examples and websites that I use to get educated in the civil liberties and constitution and how to take concrete actions.

These are some ideas:

1) The opinions of others will be respected. Since this is a forum for firearms enthusiasts we are going to assume that everyone here is to protect our 2nd amendment but most important, to protect our 1st amendment that includes the right to express ourselves in a respectful way.

2) As much as you can, try not to mix politics with firearms rights. People from both parties have been using the Rights to bear arms to fill their agendas and provide the illusion that they are helping but some are doing more harm than good. Yes, there are many organizations that are affiliated with political parties that support the 2nd amendment and yes they do help but at the same time we have to keep in mind what other agendas might be hidden from us. I don't think that individuals or organizations should use our fears to loosing our arms or any other fears to support a specific person, party or organization. Specially using incendiary words about any opposition is not going to get anyone far. You see, the right to bear arms is in the supreme law of the land so you do not need any party to tell you if this is a right or not.

3) When you find about a bill that it is about to be voted by our politicians call, email or write to your senators or local representatives and tell them about the need to protect your constitutional rights, whether they are the 1st or 2nd amendment. Discuss with your friends at your neighborhood, sports team, local range or club and ask as many people as you can, to write or call always in a polite manner. The more people you get on board, the better. Do not be passive. Do it. It is important to call whether it is something that affects the 2nd amendment OR ANY OTHER rights. The reason for this is very simple: IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that policy makers anywhere in the USA know that there are more and more people every day watching over their decisions that involve or collide with constitutional rights.

4) Choose one or two organizations where you can get educated about your constitutional rights. Read about American History, About the constitution, the struggles of civil liberties and other many great things that were part of the process to freedom.

I joined the following organizations mainly for education and support:

Equal Justice Foundation - http://www.ejfi.org/
Oath Keepers - http://OathKeepers.com
National Rifle Association (NRA) - http://www.nra.org

I stay away for organizations that require constant donations, political endorsements and approach radically with strong agendas and incendiary words.

I take the above URLs and some others below, and put them in little paper strips and I distribute them among friends, including veterans like me and also police officers, medics, rangers, etc.. active or retired.
It is all about reminding our citizens about their constitutional rights and the organizations that support them.

5) When old enough, teach your kids about firearms safety. If you hunt show them about responsible ownership and safety. If you like target shooting put aside some time to show safe practices. See if you can organize a youth shooting league in your time. Get other parents involved and show them how this can be a healthy sport that builds character and discipline in kids.

The civilian marksmanship program it is a great source for information
http://thecmp.org/

6) Teach your kids about the constitution. Do not just talk about firearms but the other great things that protect our freedom and unity. Check if their school covers the war of independence and the constitution well. If they don't cover this, volunteer to talk about history and the Constitution. Ask teachers to add materials about American history and the constitution. A lot of politicians do not want our kids to learn the constitution as this provides a way to unite and eliminate fears and they want our fears work to their advantage.

7) Approach your neighbors and offer your help. When you are helping discuss about freedom. Do not talk about freedoms of guns only but approach with other subjects like the history and why we have our liberty. Once we start with this approach people are willing to listen.

8) Support our Military, Police, Fireman, Medics, Rangers and everyone that helps us stay save and enjoy our freedom. Get involved locally and make donations to these organizations. In times of economic uncertainty and political corruption, policy makers have no problem in downsizing police, fireman or first responder departments. Also closing schools and libraries due to budget cuts but never question whether they and many of their legislative body positions should be the first to go. They are not the ones taking you out of a burning home or protecting you from thieves and thugs.

Also talk to your friends in the military and police to make sure they are not invited to participate in arrests, seizures or any kind of activities that violate any of the constitutional rights. There is a risk for your Military and Police friends that by simply following orders they might end up in a situation where they might later be accountable for. Any military or police has the right to refuse an order that is unlawful.

The Equal Justice Foundation believes:
• Citizens should not be torn from their homes and children in the middle of the night based on nothing more than hearsay.
• Men and women should not be presumed guilty until they can prove their innocence.
• A secret tribunal should not have the power to force a man from his home without notice or hearing.
• Police should not have the right to enter and search a citizen's home without a warrant.
• Citizens should not be imprisoned based only on hearsay.
• Citizens should not be more afraid of the police than they are of criminals.
• A legal system that tolerates perjury and the subornation of perjury can not produce justice.
• Men should not be censured by public officials for crimes they have not committed.
• Men and women should not be made to work as indentured servants or held in thrall to others for acts they have not committed.
You can ask to join in a pledge and remind them of their oath. Point them to Oathkeepers, it is a good source to remind us about this oath we took:

http://oathkeepers.org/oath/

When a police officer or fireman, or a soldier in your town is killed talk to your kids. Take their hands, say a prayer and hold one minute of silence. We do this while we sit at the table before dinner and we give thanks for his or her service to our country and our liberty.

I support my local fire and police departments and follow these websites and participate in services to honor our local heroes:

http://www.freedomriders.com/
http://policesupport.com/
http://www.va.gov/ (as I am a veteran I also discuss va. affairs with other veterans)

9) Write down your goals for the year and as you achieve them share them through a post so others can use your ideas too.
Please ACT and ACT NOW!!!!

I hope this helps you decide what is right and spring into action.

Cheers,
E.

I wonder if we don't define the right to keep and bear arms too narrowly by focusing entirely on firearms. Isn't a knife an arm? Collapsible batons like the ASP are arms, yet we are not allowed to carry these in many places. It seems to me I should be allowed to carry a Claymore if I choose to. IMO, we need to broaden the fight.

Claymore mine or claymore broadsword?

I agree on the whole post, good stuff, OathKeepers is a good outfit, and the NRA is always good. Also get with Gun Owners of America, too.

great post.

i hope a broadsword. i would prefer not to have my legs blown off while taking a stroll around the neighborhood.

Back in the day reporter Edward W. Murrow said of Senator McCarthy:

“ His primary achievement has been in confusing the public mind, as between the internal and the external threats of Communism. We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty. We must remember always that accusation is not proof and that conviction depends upon evidence and due process of law. We will not walk in fear, one of another. We will not be driven by fear into an age of unreason, if we dig deep in our history and our doctrine, and remember that we are not descended from fearful men. [...]

We proclaim ourselves, as indeed we are, the defenders of freedom, wherever it continues to exist in the world, but we cannot defend freedom abroad by deserting it at home. The actions of the junior Senator from Wisconsin have caused alarm and dismay amongst our allies abroad, and given considerable comfort to our enemies. And whose fault is that? Not really his. He didn't create this situation of fear; he merely exploited it—and rather successfully.[8

Politicians are a cancer today. They want to stop the talk and to disarm the citizens and leave us to the mercy of criminals. The criminals have to love these laws, they can rape, steal and walk into anyone's home w/o fear. To restore our freedom we need to act. Freedom doesn't protect by itself. It needs the help of brave men and women.

So What action are you going to take? ACT!

Thanks for your support.

Not too long ago in our history a Sheriff in a town could ask a deputy to beat African American citizens. The deputy should know better and say "NO!!" I will not obey this order. This is against the constitution.

Not long ago the government ordered to place US citizens in the Lousiana Superdome after Katrina. They were arrested and not allowed to leave the place against their will when inside there was pillage, death and disease.

Don't be a fool. Plan for a disaster and talk to your neighbors. Help each other and don't allow anyone to put a fence around your town or enter your homes w/o a warrant and seize property whether they are firearms or essential supplies for you to survive. Read, discuss and understand your rights and most important your responsibilities in a situation Without the Rule of Law. If you have to help police your town do it in a coordinated and well organize manner.
We are not there to go out a show, wave or shoot our guns like thugs but to maintain the peace and help our local police, fireman and medics.
This is what it is important to educate citizens with firearms. I see the two sides every day. The responsible citizen and the one that is unsafe and doesn't have a clue.

If we are not careful and do not educate our children and friends about situations like the above and even worse, it will happen again. It is a matter of time.

E.

Superb article (I cant call it a post;)), there really is a lot more to it than just paying your dues and reading over bills.

I try to stay up to date on gun laws and national politics, but its just so confusing.:banghead: What, with NFA, GCA, FOPA, AWB, etc.

+1 on the point you made about politicians pandering to gun owners for votes rather than fighting for principles.

Excellent read!
I have to look into how i can get more involved. The person who I wanted got voted into office, so our rights here in wisconsin should be better off. Good luck in the other states (like ours south of the boarder)

oerllikon,
Many thanks. Start with your community. Help somebody. Give some little pieces of papers with those sites to the police, military, fire you know.
Also volunteer to talk about the constitution if you have kids in school. Learn about it, teach it and be proud. Simple things that will make you feel 1000 times better, at least this is what happened to me.

Don't preach 2nd amendments and my guns only rights. This is about our liberty that is at stake here.
Also stay away from those guys preaching aggressive politics to gun owners, folks running around with guns on the internet. Be a respected responsible civilian and gun owner as I am pretty sure you already are.

Cheers,
E.

Some interesting insight from a fellow patriot on the run and gun situation. In a smart world some folks would not qualify to own a firearm since they are not being responsible citizens and they are doing more harm than good to the image and reputation of those who are. What message they are giving running around in Halloween customs shooting out of control.

HEAR HEAR! Great insight. Its good to see a post on "RIGHTS" in general not just gun rights. It seems like such a "Hot Topic", everyone saying that 2nd ammendment rights are being infringed, or slipping away that people are loosing sight of the big picture. What happened to States Rights? The 10th ammendment protects states sovregnity, yet California cant legalize marijuana if they want to beacuse the DEA (a FEDERAL agency) wont let them. The Firearms Freedom Act is a states rights act challenging this thank god, but again its not the topic that i applaud, its the states saying "ENOUGH".

We forget so recently as the 30's when the FBI was new they were highly controversial due to their interstate authority. many people viewed them as a gestapo.

i could go on, but i agree. the days of sitting on the porch screaming "theyre taking our guns!" or quietly talking politics in our homes need to stop. our representatives need to know now their constituants feel on issues. Of all the californians or new yorkers that hate their laws, how many do you think have written their governor, or let alone voted recently?

itsreese,
Wise words. I am more worry about the 1st amendment than the 2nd one. Many folks that are screaming about the guns rights never read the constitution. It doesn't make any sense, does it?
For many the 2nd amendment and induced fears is just another trump card to gain popularity and beef up their political agendas.

A responsible gun owner should be first a responsible citizen with all that this entails.

Cheers,
E.

Edward Murrow was accused to be a communist because he was open minded, he knew the constitution and many times defended the rights of US citizens.
He took it on Senator McArthy for organizing hearings and persecutions on people for no reason other than hearsay.

For me he is a hero not just because of his awesome WWII broadcasts but also because he was a model of integrity, an excellent reporter with objective approaches to controversial
issues and ultimately a fighter for our liberty and constitutional rights.

So what a responsible citizen can learn from this?.....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=anNEJJYLU8M&feature=related

What are you doing to stopping our current legislators from creating laws that infringe in our constitutional rights, not just the gun laws but all the other rights?
Fear of communism then was to induce more fear and the driver for many legislative agendas to manipulate the public minds. Now is terrorism, the pandemic flu, the gun activists, etc....
sound familiar?
If you do nothing then you deserve whatever you get but think about your children too.

Cheers,
E.

In light of recent events talk to your friends, family and kids. Explain that what happens is not the fault of guns but the failures in society.
Have you done anything about to help create awareness and inform citizens about their rights and responsibilities?
A responsible firearm owner has to be a good citizen first.
Post your ideas here.

E.

Thanks for bringing this up!

This is the responsible response from Irakveteran8888 to the situation of kids running around with AR's and AK's all over the internet. I think that the intention of these kids is ultimately a good one but the message they are giving is the wrong one so Irak veteran makes very clear his view in the situation and I totally concur.

Any of the points you can follow but nr. 4 is pretty easy...
