Fellow citizens and firearms enthusiasts.
Not long ago I realized I had to stop complaining online about the many attacks to our constitution and actually do something about it.
It is not just our right to keep and bears arms what it is a stake here but much more. Clear violations of the first amendment are happening right in your town.
I know about the many active efforts by many good citizens to regain our liberty that slowly but steadily has been eroding. Politicians of both main parties have been using the firearms rights and its constant struggles to fill out their agendas.
In the last two years I became increasingly unsatisfied with my previous "passive" attitude and I realized that before things got worse I needed to help, I needed to act!. Before I used to criticize violations of our first and second amendments but I didn't actually do anything about it. Basically I just complained about it in the hope somebody would do something. Well, if we all did that then nothing will change in the end.
I have been doing much thinking and I came up with a several ideas that can be easily adopted and implemented by anyone to help us recover our rights.
Please do not come to any quick conclusions and read below. I have not political interest or affiliation. I am doing this in good faith and I will be looking for ideas from many of the smart people in this forum.
With these ideas below I provide some examples and websites that I use to get educated in the civil liberties and constitution and how to take concrete actions.
These are some ideas:
1) The opinions of others will be respected. Since this is a forum for firearms enthusiasts we are going to assume that everyone here is to protect our 2nd amendment but most important, to protect our 1st amendment that includes the right to express ourselves in a respectful way.
2) As much as you can, try not to mix politics with firearms rights. People from both parties have been using the Rights to bear arms to fill their agendas and provide the illusion that they are helping but some are doing more harm than good. Yes, there are many organizations that are affiliated with political parties that support the 2nd amendment and yes they do help but at the same time we have to keep in mind what other agendas might be hidden from us. I don't think that individuals or organizations should use our fears to loosing our arms or any other fears to support a specific person, party or organization. Specially using incendiary words about any opposition is not going to get anyone far. You see, the right to bear arms is in the supreme law of the land so you do not need any party to tell you if this is a right or not.
3) When you find about a bill that it is about to be voted by our politicians call, email or write to your senators or local representatives and tell them about the need to protect your constitutional rights, whether they are the 1st or 2nd amendment. Discuss with your friends at your neighborhood, sports team, local range or club and ask as many people as you can, to write or call always in a polite manner. The more people you get on board, the better. Do not be passive. Do it. It is important to call whether it is something that affects the 2nd amendment OR ANY OTHER rights. The reason for this is very simple: IT IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that policy makers anywhere in the USA know that there are more and more people every day watching over their decisions that involve or collide with constitutional rights.
4) Choose one or two organizations where you can get educated about your constitutional rights. Read about American History, About the constitution, the struggles of civil liberties and other many great things that were part of the process to freedom.
I joined the following organizations mainly for education and support:
Equal Justice Foundation - http://www.ejfi.org/
Oath Keepers - http://OathKeepers.com
National Rifle Association (NRA) - http://www.nra.org
I stay away for organizations that require constant donations, political endorsements and approach radically with strong agendas and incendiary words.
I take the above URLs and some others below, and put them in little paper strips and I distribute them among friends, including veterans like me and also police officers, medics, rangers, etc.. active or retired.
It is all about reminding our citizens about their constitutional rights and the organizations that support them.
5) When old enough, teach your kids about firearms safety. If you hunt show them about responsible ownership and safety. If you like target shooting put aside some time to show safe practices. See if you can organize a youth shooting league in your time. Get other parents involved and show them how this can be a healthy sport that builds character and discipline in kids.
The civilian marksmanship program it is a great source for information
http://thecmp.org/
6) Teach your kids about the constitution. Do not just talk about firearms but the other great things that protect our freedom and unity. Check if their school covers the war of independence and the constitution well. If they don't cover this, volunteer to talk about history and the Constitution. Ask teachers to add materials about American history and the constitution. A lot of politicians do not want our kids to learn the constitution as this provides a way to unite and eliminate fears and they want our fears work to their advantage.
7) Approach your neighbors and offer your help. When you are helping discuss about freedom. Do not talk about freedoms of guns only but approach with other subjects like the history and why we have our liberty. Once we start with this approach people are willing to listen.
8) Support our Military, Police, Fireman, Medics, Rangers and everyone that helps us stay save and enjoy our freedom. Get involved locally and make donations to these organizations. In times of economic uncertainty and political corruption, policy makers have no problem in downsizing police, fireman or first responder departments. Also closing schools and libraries due to budget cuts but never question whether they and many of their legislative body positions should be the first to go. They are not the ones taking you out of a burning home or protecting you from thieves and thugs.
Also talk to your friends in the military and police to make sure they are not invited to participate in arrests, seizures or any kind of activities that violate any of the constitutional rights. There is a risk for your Military and Police friends that by simply following orders they might end up in a situation where they might later be accountable for. Any military or police has the right to refuse an order that is unlawful.
The Equal Justice Foundation believes:
• Citizens should not be torn from their homes and children in the middle of the night based on nothing more than hearsay.
• Men and women should not be presumed guilty until they can prove their innocence.
• A secret tribunal should not have the power to force a man from his home without notice or hearing.
• Police should not have the right to enter and search a citizen's home without a warrant.
• Citizens should not be imprisoned based only on hearsay.
• Citizens should not be more afraid of the police than they are of criminals.
• A legal system that tolerates perjury and the subornation of perjury can not produce justice.
• Men should not be censured by public officials for crimes they have not committed.
• Men and women should not be made to work as indentured servants or held in thrall to others for acts they have not committed.
You can ask to join in a pledge and remind them of their oath. Point them to Oathkeepers, it is a good source to remind us about this oath we took:
http://oathkeepers.org/oath/
When a police officer or fireman, or a soldier in your town is killed talk to your kids. Take their hands, say a prayer and hold one minute of silence. We do this while we sit at the table before dinner and we give thanks for his or her service to our country and our liberty.
I support my local fire and police departments and follow these websites and participate in services to honor our local heroes:
http://www.freedomriders.com/
http://policesupport.com/
http://www.va.gov/ (as I am a veteran I also discuss va. affairs with other veterans)
9) Write down your goals for the year and as you achieve them share them through a post so others can use your ideas too.
Please ACT and ACT NOW!!!!
I hope this helps you decide what is right and spring into action.
Cheers,
E.
