As the title states I stopped at my LGS today looking for a new S&W 9mm EZ or maybe a Walther PPS in 9mm. They Had virtually bare shelves with just a few used handguns in stock. And he stated that nothing is available and none are being made as there are no raw materials for manufacture. He said that the aluminum all comes from China to make the small parts and none has been shipped.
Do you all agree with this?
I didn't realize that we don't really produce aluminum here in the USA . And why hasn't china shipped any by now?
I know that you can't buy a bicycle right now my friend has been looking, but they are made in China not here. None expected until the fall.
When can we get new pistols again?

Supply and demand issue with demand outstripping supply.

But don't worry, I bet gun manufacturers will make more, lots more guns. :D

It's getting nuts, the local sporting goods store used to have around 50 pistols on display, I was there today and there were 2! I just checked 3 major only gunstores and the pps m2 was out of stock at all 3. If there's no aluminum available from China, you'd think recyclables would be going for really high prices but I haven't heard anything to that effect.

A quick google estimates American aluminum can production at 100 billion per year. If gun production uses 1% of that amount of aluminum I'd be very surprised.

Aluminum cans are very scarce in my part of Montana right now. The store has a sign up saying there's a shortage of soda due to a lack of aluminum to make the cans. So they're likely getting that from their vendors, not some rumor. I dunno how that might relate to firearm parts. I expect it has more to do with supply and demand. About ten days ago it got up to almost a hundred and you couldn't find an air conditioner in any store, either.

I was in a new gunshop in the area's large town. This is #4 for the town of about 40,000. They had quite a good supply of handguns and a fair supply of rifles. What they didn't have was much ammo. I was also in the local farm and ranch store that sells guns and ammo and they were well stocked on guns and pretty good on most ammo. There was not much 45 acp. no 380 or 22 long rifle, but some 9 mm. You want to find plenty of ammo there either get a 17hmr or a 6.5 creedmore. They had an excellent supply of the last. The local LGS has done pretty well on most ammo but he is having trouble getting handguns.

Guns sales are high, the inventory has been depleted, and the factories have been slowed by the c-bug. Of course we have a demand/supply problem.

And that will have more to do with employees out sick with Covid, reduced operating hours, etc., not the China rumors. Gun and ammo companies are running as fast as they physically can or are allowed. When supply catches up with demand, it will like it was a year ago

Plenty of guns here where there is little threat against civil unrest and most people already had plenty of firearms. But there is no 9mm, .40 S&W, or 5.56. Reloading components are also about gone. If you want 9mm or ,40 S&W bullets, online is your only option.

OP here,
I have to add that my LGS will usually order what I want if he doesn't have it in stock. He didn't even bother to check with his suppliers today. Also that he has no inventory tells me that for the reason he gave or supply and demand he couldn't restock his shelves. I'm sure that he doesn't want an empty store. Not a good bussines practice.
I also checked with Buds, Palmetto and a few of the other vendors that ship and they had none as well.

I just went to 2 different gun shops in NW Fl. Both were well-stocked with new popular handguns at reasonable prices, for what they are. Ammo is still plentiful but pricey (yet competitively priced based on the current doomsday scenario) at one store, and they impose limits on handgun HP ammo, all 9mm ammo, and 5.56 ball. The current "winner" is 7.62 x 39 at $6 a box of 20, with no limits. I did notice that the S&W AR's that normally went for around $500 pre-apocalypse are in the $700 range. There are also several of the off-brand defense type shotguns available. Plenty of new AR's, but they are the higher-end type I also noticed that the "daily deals" for guns and ammo I get spammed with by PSA 3x a day aren't what I would have considered "deals" at all 6 months ago, but are still competitive in the current market. As for Academy sports in P-cola- very few handguns, no MSR's, and no shotguns without duck hunting length barrels. I also call BS on your local dealer.

I heard he’s been stockpiling it just so we can’t have beer, so more humans will work on Mondays.

:p

Sand is glass and aluminum, West Michigan will be fine...;)

He didn't even bother to check with his suppliers today.
I would find another shop.
No, I would find the pistol, even in this time of famine, and send it there. After picking it up, he would see me no more.

His distributor doesn’t have one, fine. Has he no other outlet? No other pathway?
And he just knows there isn’t any at the distributor that may have shown up in the last days?

Yes it is Supply and Demand, but it also sounds like a lack of service and “give a dang”.
I know if someone wanted to give me money, I would at least call with them standing there.
With no merchandise, what else have I to do?

Heck, I might even look this up here, and find it a great deal in this market, for an even better pistol, and have it shipped straight to my store for you.
(For a small finders fee, of course.:))

Yeah, I know what the link says, @solman , but it goes to a PC Ez9mm at Grabagun.;)

Interesting. I swung by my local Sportsman's Warehouse today. The pegs on the wall were full of handguns, the counters had a bunch of 1911s and big-bore S&W revolvers, the shotgun and the rifle racks were full. Guess their distributor finally came through.

Of course, the handgun ammo shelves were bare. Bare. Plenty of rifle ammo, as long as one doesn't need .223/5.556.

I was expecting to read, "Then I woke up from my dream" ... :D

Guess their distributor finally came through.
I am sure the gun manufacturers are making as many guns as possible so it's good to see restock happening.

I work in a smaller machine and fab shop and I do most of the materials purchasing and all metal prices are low with no issue getting aluminum and most metals. The airline industry is very depressed right now and they use quite a bit of aluminum. Some grades are more difficult to get like 7050 and 2024 but they are still available. I meet with metal vendors all the time and they are beating the bushes trying to drum up business. If I send request for quotation out I usually get an immediate response.
