StopTheNRA.com urges people to "Strengthen Brady Background Checks". Interestingly, the NRA also has lobbied for passage of the same bill. So, why did the Brady Campaign create a group known as StopTheNRA, when the NRA supports the same legislation as the Brady Campaign?

Bill to Improve the Brady Law's National Instant Check System (NICS) Moves to Senate
Dear Brent,

Today (Thursday), the Senate Judiciary Committee is scheduled to consider a bill to make it harder for criminals and other dangerous people to buy firearms, by strengthening the Brady background check system.

This means that hundreds of thousands of prohibited purchasers not currently in the Brady Law’s National Instant Checks System (NICS) would be added to the system and thus will be blocked from buying guns. It is estimated that 25% of felony convictions and 90% of disqualifying mental health records are currently not in NICS.

The bill provides funding incentives to states to improve their reporting of currently prohibited buyers to NICS of both felons and people adjudicated mentally ill. A similar bill was passed by the House in June, and now we need the Senate to act.

The Brady Law, which mandates that federally licensed firearms dealers conduct background checks on prospective gun purchasers, has prevented nearly 1.4 million prohibited persons from buying guns. However, a background check is only as good as the records it can search.

The Virginia Tech massacre, where 32 students and teachers were killed in the worst mass shooting in American history, is a horrific example of the dangers of this data gap. The killer was able to buy guns even though he was legally prohibited from doing so, because the records indicating that he had been adjudicated mentally ill and dangerous were not in NICS to be searched when his background checks were conducted.

Brady has had the "Stop the NRA" as a bumper sticker mentality for a while.

The only reason this bill (backing adding ajudication of mental illness to the NICS data base) is moving forward at all is because the NRA is backing it.

(I'm in favor of it too, FWIW thanks to an ex wife that was hospitalized and arrested several times for DUI and other mental health issues, but had "daddy" bail her out each time and make sure her record was expunged. For several years the kids and I lived in fear of what she might do, until she finally was committed involuntarily by the Indiana cops. Now, no guns for her thankfully.)

The Brady bunch is jumping on the bandwagon and trying to take credit for it and dupe people into thinking it's some kind of big victory for them over the forces of darkness, the NRA and all of us evil minions.

Looks like you got their email about the same time I did.

Makes me wonder what precentage of folks on their mailing list are gunnies just wondering what they're up to. :D
