I bought my first 1911 .45 last week. I see alot of pictures online of pistols with the hammer in the full cocked position. Is this correct for storage or just for photographing?

If you are storing the gun unloaded there's no reason to leave it cocked. If OTOH you are asking if it's ok to leave a 1911 cocked & locked for an extended time, it doesn't harm the weapon to do so.

It's the only way mine is stored, carried, etc - but I'm extremely familiar with that mode (cocked and locked aka "Condition 1").

When loaded, cocked & locked.

When unloaded, hammer down.
