Strange Knocks at the Door.

Ah the mind bending powers of a well turned buttock...

But if you were so dazed as to sign up for two subscriptions, perhaps you need to get out more? :)

Having been through this several times I have to say the best thing I've done is put a gate at the entrance of my driveway. Consider the perps attitude taking a long walk up the driveway, leaving their vehicle on the road for all to see. Also consider their chances for return after running back down the driveway after encountering a pissed off lookin' guy with the firearm of the day in hand.

UPS and Fedex will leave a note, plus you will hear that big old truck running and/or turning around. I live in the country and caught two guys hiding out in my driveway. I don't screw around anymore. I have two giant dogs, a driveway notification system, a gate, and if they get past all that I will certainly be awake and they will have to deal with a guy that is protecting his family and is really pissed off. I am really (and I mean really) getting tired of all the a-holes that think they can/should/ or can get away with screwing with someone elses property.

A future perimeter security option to consider is a wireless driveway alarm
if you don't want a dog. Period battery changes would be the primary maintenance issue, but cheaper than dog food and vet bills.

Not a guarantee of an alert, but will give you advance warning of most vehicles. Since you apparently don't have much casual vehicle traffic on your driveway, the alert rate won't be an issue.

is that really it? no more "news" or updates from the original poster? i feel somewhat empty with the lack of resolution after such a build-up.

Blutarsky, often in these situations, no news is good news. I think the newspaper story told the missing details on the guy casing the house. Maybe they left the area, maybe they got caught. Regardless, lessons have been learned and I'm willing to leave it at that.

The original poster hasnt updated us in a while, the problem must be over. My suggestion is as everyone else's. Alert your local LE, get a dog, train your wife on a strategic plan and the ins and outs of handgun tactics. Also, someone else mentioned taking a picture, if possible, have your wife take a picture of the person and his vehicle. This is not being paranoid, everything I listed is all within sanity. I hope everything has turned out well.

Good for the op this is over. I searched four gun forums looking for this as I remembered I had not had a chance to finish reading the messages and then I lost it...hence me searching four forums. I am going to use some of this ASAP, I have security lights although I haven't hung them yet.

Don't Open the Door

I try to get my wife to understand that you don't HAVE to open the door just because someone knocks.

If you know full well who it is, go ahead. But if you have any uncertainty, open a window close to door and ask if you can help the person from there (preferably a window that is on the "gun side" of the house).

And a particular utility company uniform doesn't mean you "know who it is." The answer of "I can't come to the door right now" is always allowed. I don't want her to say "my husband isn't home" just let them know they can't come in.

I don't think that is paranoid, I think it is prudent.

Another thought do any of you carry while you are in the house? I have started to keep a Kimber GuardianAngel (pepper spray) either with me or near me, especially if I take the dog out or something. I've seen skunks and large dogs in my front yard, so it isn't just about human "nasties" either.

A deputy friend of mine told me that a common tactic of badguys here in Florida is to knock on the door and if no one answers to go around the back and break in. He said that they often return to the same house/block several times before making their move. I guess they want to minimize their chance of encountering someone home. I would notify the local police with the information you have about this guy. I would arm my wife with something more than a snubby. A dog is key here too.

Interesting that Molon Labe (the OP) hasn't had a single post on the board since his last entry in this thread -- 17 Jul 2007. I hope that's not a bad sign...

Jim
