Just finished watching Streets of Fire on DVD which I hadn't watched in years. I love these old 80's (and 70's) B-movies. One thing I noticed in the movie is that some store must have had a blowout special on lever action rifles because there are about a hundred of them in this movie. Made for a lot of cool *chik-chik* moments for the sound editors though. Also, it's hard to beat a good sledgehammer showdown for originality. ;)

This movie was directed by Walter Hill, who also directed one of the greatest movies of all time, The Warriors, as well as Last Man Standing (a 1911 lover's wet dream). This guy does some cool B-ish movies. He also directed Crossroads, which my friends and I thought of as the ultimate guitar movie when we were in high school.

What are some of your favorite B-movies and B-movie gun moments?

We've already discussed normal, mainstream movies until we're blue in the face so let's keep this focused more on the cheaper, weird, undergroundish B stuff.

Oh yeah, some other faves I forgot to mention:

The Adventures of Buckaroo Bonzai Across the Eighth Dimension - This was the source of the famed line "Wherever you go, there you are." No, that country and western singer didn't make it up himself.

Six String Samurai - This one was almost TOO cheesy to enjoy...almost.

Ghost Dog - I don't know if this can actually be considered a B-movie since it was directed by an official "art house" guy, Jim Jarmusch, but it has all the elements.

One of the funnier gun moments I have seen is in "The Last House on the Left," an early film by Wes Craven.

This is a spoiler, so if you guys ever plan on seeing this twisted little no-budget exploitation pic, turn away now. :)

A father realizes that the guests in his house murdered his daughter. He sneaks up on two of the sleeping killers with a side-by-side shotgun and lets loose with a blast - one of them is shot. The other knocks the shotgun away and chases the father into the basement.

The father gets a CHAINSAW(!) and starts coming at the guy. The killer tries to shoot the other barrel of the shotgun, but the only sound is a click.

"Sorry, Krug...I could only find one shell!" The father eventually chainsaws the other guy to death. :D

I liked that part in one of the Phantasm movies where the guy clamps two double barrel shotguns together and cuts the barrels off into a point.:p

My fav? "Alien Space Avenger" -- actually chatted with the director too, nice guy. A little unknown gem -- "The Hounds of Notre Dame"...also spoke with the director of that one too -- another nice guy. I liked "Streets of Fire" -- chatted briefly with Elizabeth Daily who starred in the film. Another gem is "Queen of Hearts" about an Italian family staring over in England until their past catches up with them. But one of my all time favs -- "Biggles: Adventures in Time." I'm surprised no one knows about it -- what a great movie....wish they were ALL available on DVD. :)

Damn DigMe... You mentioned the 3 top films on my list in your second post. I guess I'd have to add;
"Big Trouble In Little China," not exactly a shoestring budget production but a fun movie with some cool fight scenes.

"Penn & Teller Get Killed," great movie that rarely ever gets played anywhere. Any fan of their magic act should see the movie.

"The Wizard Of Speed & Time," great little movie made by a guy who does special effects when he was trying to break into the business. The movie is a bit silly but an enjoyable flick, no guns in this one though.

When I was in college my friends and I would have "B-movie Night" once a week were everyone would pick something weird off the shelf at the video store, got to see some great movies as well as some horrendous garbage due to those nights. I must say NEVER watch "Switchblade Sisters," it's one of the worst movies of all time and we never let my friend Pat live it down (he chose that one).

Edited to add: Biggles: Adventures in Time??? I didn't think anyone saw that film other than me and the couple of people I've forced to watch it at my place! LOL... another weird one is "Burt Rigby, You'r a Fool" which is kind of a newer homage to the old musicals, the lead character is obsessed with the old classics like singing in the rain and ends up taking a shot at getting into movies in hollywood.

You're right, Elizabeth hasn't starred in much but she's a B actress I like. She was in a film -- can't remember the name, which she did star in and sang a really beautiful song, "Waiting for my man to change." Maybe she can't act but she sure can sing....:)

I know Tarrantino likes to promote the Hong Kong stuff but a lot of his "discoveries" are old films. Can't say he has great taste but I've long been a fan of Wong Kar Wai -- "Chungking Express" is a must see. Actually, anything with Brigitte Lin is a great B flick:

1. Bride with White Hair I & II
2. Web of Deception
3. The East is Red
4. Swordmen II
5. Police Story
6. Ashes of Time
7. Peking Opera Blues

I could go on forever with Hong Kong B movies...:p

"STREET MUSIC" -- just remembered the film Daily starred in!! It went nowhere but I loved the movie.

"Penn & Teller Get Killed," great movie that rarely ever gets played anywhere. Any fan of their magic act should see the movie.

Evil Ed, I thought I was the only one on the planet to appreciate this movie. Too keep this gun related, a quote
[old lady] "You were lucky, shot in the arm"
[Penn] "No, lucky is winning the lottery, I was shot in the arm".

Streets of Fire and Buckaroo Banzai-two of my favorites! Two odd little alternate history/dimension flicks. DigMe, you MUST see the DVD Director's cut of Buckaroo. It's even more bizarre than the movie. I don't want to spoil it for you. :uhoh:

How about "Romeo is Bleeding" as a B film? I loved Lena Olin handling her gun -- Ruger was it? Also "Rustler's Rhapsody" with Patrick Wayne -- God was he cute....and of course, "El Mariachi." :D Don't forget "Near Dark" a cowboy meets vampire type flick....

Night Of The Comet: Two Valley Girls (who just happen to have been trained to use firearms by their soldier father), use submachine guns to fight off zombies.

Rent a movie called "Fade to black". Great little movie about a nerdy guy obsessed with movies who tries to become the actual characters and then starts killing folks. To keep this gun-related, at one point he becomes Hop-Along Cassidy and sports a fancy two-gun rig. Interesting movie. BTW, I thought Six-String Samurai was alot of fun for a goofy little movie.

Another vote for Night of the Comet. My favorite scene is when the girls are riddling a cop car with mac’s and one keeps jamming. The younger one makes the comment “see that’s the problem with these things, daddy would have gotten us UZI’sâ€.

Two Gun Lady, 1956, starring Peggy Castle.

Bar owner pulls a sawed-offf double barrel from behind the bar and covers the Gunfighter.

Gunfighter - You're hands are shakin'
Bar Owner - The shot spreads better
Gunfighter - You weren't this brave before.
Bar Owner - I'm not that brave now. That's what makes me so dangerous.

Arvo Ojala has a bit part as a henchman.

Don't forget Way of the Gun!

One of my all-time favorites is Way of the Gun, with Benicio del Toro, James Caan, and Ryan Phillipe. The tech advisor was a SEAL, and the final gunfight must be seen to be believed. The director and his SEAL brother used a model of the old mission/bordello and toy soldiers to plan the whole action sequence.

The first gunfight was interesting also. Most of it happens off-camera, but when we come outside we see the last part of it. Look off to the right, in the background, and you see a couple in a car; it looks like one of them has been hit by a stray bullet fired by one of the bodyguards.

A few memorable lines, including "Fifteen million dollars is not money. It's a motive with a universal adaptor on it."

Best of all, I see that WotG is now available for $5.50 at my local Wally World.

Cheers,
Dirty Bob
