Stuck case

I ran out of the sizing lube that I normally use, so I tied some Hornady One Shot. The third .223 case stuck in my RCBS sizing die. Any ideas of how to remove it? Also has anyone had problems with Hornady One Shot?

Yes, I just started loading 223 and stuck three cases. I think it was my fault for not lubing them good. My dies are Lee and very easy to remove a stuck case. I'm not familiar with the RCBS dies. If it is similar to the lee die you should be able to remove the top of the die and drive the case out very careful with a punch.

You need either a stuck case remover from your sporting goods store; or

1/2" Socket (1/4" drive)
1/4" x 1" Machine bolt
1/4" Tap
13/64" drill bit (came with the tap)
1/4" x 1 1/2" Washer (to keep from gouging the top of the socket)

Drill out the primer hole, tap it, insert bolt thru washer thru 1/2 in socket, screw into tapped primer hole, until case is removed.

A trick is to put the die and case in the freezer for a few hours or more before you opperate.

Bummer, you can't just drive it out from the top like the Lee die? I can remove a stuck case in my Lee die and be back in business in under 1 minute. I was thinking about buying a RCBS X-die. Do you know if the X-die is that hard to remove a stuck case from also?

Take out the expander rod. Get a short piece of brass rod that'll fit in the threaded hole(usually 1/8" or so in diameter) and long enough to stick out a half inch or so, put the rod into the hole and down into the bottom of the stuck case and whack the brass rod with a plastic mallet. Neither the brass rod nor plastic mallet will hurt your die.

if you can get the expanding rod out. its usually stuck on that. i usually take a small file and file it down until i can get a piece of the brass up then peel it back with some needle nose plyers.

on another note. when using hornadays one shot i usually spray a quick burst up the die itself. i do this once every 8 -10 rounds. makes it a little easier on the dies as well as spraying the cases.


I heard a while back someone say they place their brass in a large sanwhich bag and spray the lube in it then rotate the shells. I tried this a few days ago. It works really good. avoids waisting lube as well as getting it all over the bench or cardboar.

some dies will not allow you to remove the rod through the top. shoney's homemade tool is similar to a factory-made stuck case remover.

Been there done that. tried the freezer tried heat. one time it worked another time it did not. now i dont even mess with it. take out the file stop crying get the shell off and get back to work.

Tried Hornady One shot. ONCE! Threw the rest away and went back to Dillon spray lube. For the big magnums, I use Imperial Sizing Die Wax, or else RSBS liquid on a pad.

I guess it has to be good for SOMETHING.

A friend and I tried it when it first came out (I think it was called "Jet Shot" back then). After SEVERAL stuck rifle cases, we went back to the RCBS lube in the squeeze bottle and an RCBS lube pad. I've never used anything else and never stuck another case.

RCBS is very good about removing stuck cases from their dies if you send them to them.

Thanks guys. Shoney's idea gave me an idea. I screwed the sizing die into the press upside down and used my slide hammer. It took a couple of whacks, but came out. It also cleaned off my reloading bench but now I have to clean up the floor! I had always used Pacific lube on a pad, but I guess they went out of business, might try the sandwich bag with the One Shot.

Dustinthewind: In my 46 years of reloading I have used every lube that came on the market for reloading and for automotive use.

Buy the best, get some Imperial Sizing Die Wax and be done with stuck cases.

I have been reloading since '48 and just opened my fifth can of Imperial Sizing Die Wax. I've tried some others and have never used a full container of any of them. When I was competing in 1000 yard, I was shooting about 1000 rounds of rifle a month. A little dab'll do ya.

I have used Hornady One Shot for years and never stuck a case. I have always laid out my cases on cookie sheet and sprayed them then rolled them over and sprayed them again. I have since moved on from Hornady and I am now using a homemade lube found on this forum. It is 4 ounces of liquid lanolin and 1 pint of 99% isopropyl alcohol

i get a lot of stuck cases in 223 and i use hornady one shot, i find i have to reapply the lube if i let it sit for more than 15-20 minutes. i thought it was just me, i didn't realize this happens to other people. maybe i'll try a different lube once this one runs out.

anyone have good luck with any other sprays?

Skip the spray. When I use Lee Lube. It is for an additional inspection.
When lube is applied with fingers. You can get a better feel. And check the mouth for cracks.
Imperial is good, too.

1 part Anhydrous Lanolin + 5 parts Denatured Alcohol. Warm till lanolin will disperse in the alcohol( open flame is HIGHLY discouraged when warming the mixture). Put in spray bottle and lube a bunch of cases. Let the alcohol evaporate, then size away. Shake the spray bottle occasionally. Never had a stuck case with this mixture. It is nearly identical to the Dillon spray lube.

Iuse Hornady One Shot. Every time I try something else, I go right back to the one Shot.
Not to say others are not as good, I've just had good luck with OS.Quick, easy and efffective. I do my bottleneck cases on a single stage.
About the only cases that ever stuck for me was when I was forming one caliber from another.
With a little practice you can feel if something isn't right, and stop before the case becomes hopelessly stuck.
I DID have some factory .308 Norma mag cartridges that wouldn't chamber in my rifle. While re-sizing them, I stuck a loaded round. That one was no fuin to get out. Even though the de-capper rod was out, I couldn't drive through the case as the bullet and powder were in the way. I won't tell you how I got that one out as I don't want to be responsible fo causing injury to anyone. Let me just say I won't do that again.
For the normal stuck case. the drill and tap works about as well as any.
