Stupidly hypotherical "what would you use" question.

I'm working up a TO&E for a fictional organization for a Role playing game a couple of my friends are going to be playing.
Anyway, the group is organized in 11 man squads, with two five man fire teams and one squad leader. They use a fairly sedate form of power armor which basically just allows them to carry an absurd amount of equipment and guarantees them breatheable air and limited ballistic protection, and they explore other planets through the use of a transportation device that instantaniously transports them to their destination. They have a choice of weapoins within some fairly broad parameters: 1. no energy weapons 2. the weapons must be reliable, trouble free, and parts must be available 3. the weapons must use Current (2002) technology 4. The weapons must use ammunition that is either readily available in the US, or can be wildcatted on available equipment.

here comes the question.

If you were a member of this group, and you had to face hostile flora and fauna of vastly varied size, shape, and toughness, what would you use? (assuming you'd get some foreknowledge of what you'd be facing from probes or UAVs or something.)

I'm thinking that they'd have a Couple different levels of kit:

Light, for wandering around places where the largest thing is equivalent to the toughness of a deer.

Medium: where most things are about as tough as a deer, but there are larger things about

Heavy: where most things are at leas as tough as a black bear, and there are things that are elephant size about.

We probably shouldn't be here: everything is as tough as a cape buffalo or tougher.

I was thinking that light would be .223's or .243, medium would be .308s, heavy would be .376 steyr or .375 WSM or similar, and the heaviest level, everyone would carry .50 BMGs, and the SAW gunners would carry M2's kitted out with buttstocks and bipods or something.

What would you Equip a squad with under these circumstances?

Sounds like you have a decent idea of what you want for guns already. Just don't neglect shotguns (for at least some members) and sidearms. Just for kicks (and power given unknown situations) maybe a .357mag or .44mag revolver or .50AE Desert Eagle for at least some members of your team (a sidearm that can put down a bear if needed).

I'm probably going to have the issue piece be a wilson combat KZ-45 for pistols, though they're allowed to use their own piece, as long as it's at least a .40.

I dislike desert eagles, but a 629 in .44 magnum would be a good choice for a heavy sidearm.

I;m not as concerned with sidearms being equal to the task of dealing with everything (that's what rifles are for).

one of the things I had to think about was the presence of more or less humanoid beings on the planets these people are visiting.
If they're hostine, all of a sudden you're in a pretty conventional firefight, and that double barrel .416 ain't looking so good.

I've been considering either using AR-type guns, for everything, with ar-15's being the light, ar-10s in .308 being the medium, ar-10's in .375 WSM or .376 steyr for the heavy, and barrets for the "We really shouldn't be here" levels.
Fal's would work just as well, with either FNC's for the light or FAL's like tamara's in .223 for the light, and "normal" fal's for the medium and heavy.
M-14's would be plauseable, as well. mini-14's could be the light, and fullsize m-14's could be medium and heavy.

You did mention flora, I think.
Ya might wanna include flame throwers,
RPG's and throw in some hand grenades
and shaped explosives for good measure.

Just my 2 cents:)

Stargate SG1 seems to have a "gunny" on the set, as the background folks are seen with USAS-12 (gas-operated semi-auto 20-round-drum-fed 12 gauge) shotguns quite regularly.

Pretty good stuff for serious social engagements. I'd carry one if the 14-pound weight wasn't a factor.

I'm looking for more range and more capacity than a shotgun can provide.

if it weren't for the whole "we might get in conventional firefights" thing, I'd just issue scout rifles and ruger safari rifles in .458 lott or something.

Just to add to what has already been said. I would not hesitate to outfit a squad with these as well.

HK G36K on top. HK G36C below it.

I'd also toss in a few of these as well.
