New in box? Maybe one of those russian remington imports or a charles daly?...thats just to hit the price point...couldnt guess on the reliability of those. For a little more a real nice used Rem 1100 or 1187 or maybe an entry level Beretta can be had that might fit your bill.

Used Remington 1100

NIB = NEW IN BOX

That being said I don't know any new semi auto shotguns in that price range really unless there's some off brands out there that most people haven't heard of.

I've seen Tri-Star's in that range, they've got good reviews.

What's the consensus on their "Raptor" series? Sells for $300 around here.

i have also been looking at semi autos I saw an escort at academy today for $299. never heard of them. I am thinking I will buy a stoeger m3500 for $549+tax.

$600 gets you into used 1100 realm, and a few others; $800 starts to get you close to really nice used or decent enough new........you really do get what you pay for both from reliability and performance standpoints. Personally, I would rather buy once, cry once than buy cheap and keep replacing or fixing constantly which costs more in the long run.

Example, my Browning Gti O/U is now approaching 20 years old and closing in right at 200,000 rounds. I had springs and pins changed once at 90,000 and I can sell it for more than I paid for it, so I basically have had a "free gun" to shoot all this time.....................................

I looked at a mossberg 930 at walmart a day or two ago and I thought it appeared to be a lot of gun for $499, but have no experience with one. I don't think there's anything available any cheaper from a reputable manufacturer today. The best deals on new auto loading shotguns were when the Winchester 1400's were available.

What if the budget was raised to$600 and and started looking at 930's?

My 930 has eaten everything from the crap winchester bulk to 3" slug and buck.

My guess is any semi that is $400 or less will be probably be a hit or miss affair at best. If you are one to tinker, polish, and fix things maybe that is okay. Even some of the guns that sale for more are hit and miss.

My 930 is not reliable, and there are plenty that come from the factory with bad enough defects that they have to be sent right back. I would not recommend them, especially when you can get a much better shotgun (used) for the same price.

If you want to buy new, then go closer to $1,000 for a Remington Versamax, FN SLP, or Benelli M2. If you want the same performance as those for closer to your current $600 budget, look for any of the aforementioned guns or a Remington 1100 used... Pass on the 930, and certainly on the Tristar.
