Most of you are probably familiar with bokken, wooden katana for practice. Less familiar may be the suburito, a heavier, almost oar-shaped bokken meant to develop power.

Cold Steel has polypropylene trainers in Japanese styles, including a couple of bokken sizes, and a suburito. The suburito is currently available through Amazon for $24, delivered, for prime members. This is probably pretty close to shipping price, so it's a screaming deal.

I have one of these. It's about 45" long, and much heavier than a standard bokken. It will stand up to considerably more abuse if you decide to practice against somewhat resistant targets like hanging pieces of wood, or full 2 or 3 liter bottles of water.

If you're new to this type of practice, start slowly, and work on NEVER extending past your target. This will help you learn quick recovery after strikes, and protect you against self-injury cause by over-extending.

With practice, the suburito also makes a highly effective close-range weapon, for (currently) less than the price of a good bat.
