Suggestions for a cheaper shotshell load

It's dang hard to make reloading shotshells pay with today's prices. Back in the 90's I could load a box for $2.10 when new AA's or STS were $5 a box.

You're comparing AAs and STS to Fed Top Gun? Apples to oranges, BUT I can reload a 12 gauge round with 3/4oz of shot for a little over $3/box or $30/flat, compared to even the Top Guns at $60. I shoot at LEAST 2X per week for practice, 6-8 boxes each time - 400/week X (keep it conservative) 40 weeks = 16,000 rounds/year. 16,000/25 = 640 boxes. $3/box X 640 boxes = $1920 savings/year - In two years, I just saved enough for a new Browning or Beretta with change left over

The inflation calculator 1990 to 2013 says $2.10 comes out to $3.74.

So Oneounceload is loading shells cheaper than the $2.10/bx in 1990.

Yep - if your calculator is correct, I am. I buy in bulk through my club - wads by the case, hulls are free, shot is reclaimed, powder in 8# jugs and I got a special deal on primers - 98 for 5000. Even without the deal, primers run me right at 116 for 5000, making the cost a little higher. It isn't hard, but you do have to buy in bulk to max the savings - AND I pay no shipping or hazmat, because the company sells my club targets by the truckload and they put our component orders on the same truck. The freight is covered by the target freight costs

Last week I mistakenly took some 12 ga, 7/8 oz. #9 loaded with WAA Lite to the trap range. Guess what - recoil was less and I still busted 22 out of 25. That's about as well as I ever do.

Tony I don't have any pictures for evidence, but I have heard a lot of experienced trap and skeet shooters tell me that 1 oz and 7/8 oz loads produce a lot more "flyers" than 1-1/8 oz loads do.So in a way they act like a disperser load wich helps the spread some. When I switched to a 1 oz load my scores stayed in the same place.

Network with guys at your range, we have a guy that goes to big trap meets and buys bulk shot for us, we all save a little. Keep an eye on sales, well good luck with that right now, but when someone sees a deal on bulk anything that we all use, the phone rings and we pool some cash....Pistol shooters and rifle shooters too... it all works out, if everyone chips in.
