I'm having a discussion with someone on another forum about CA-style gun laws coming to the rest of us, given the results of the election. Can someone point me to a quick summary of some of the worst features of the CA laws I can cut and paste?

Thanks.

The worst part of CA gun laws in the AW ban. More than one evil feature = illegal. That includes AR-15s, AKs, FALs, etc, etc.. Also pistols like Mac-10s, UZIs, Tec-9s, etc are banned. .50 BMG rifles are also banned.

This is a may-issue state which means you probably wont be getting a concealed carry permit unless you can demonstrate a bonafied "need" to have one. Self Defense generally isnt accept as a reason for getting a permit.

You dont need any special licenses or permits to buy guns. Just walk into the store and pay your money.. There is a 10 day waiting period however, and you can only purchase one pistol per month. Private Party transfers must go through FFLs and the 10 day waiting period still applies. IIRC, The one handgun a month does not apply to private party transfers though.

Aditionally, when buying a handgun, you will need a "Handgun Safety Cert." .. you just pay a fee and pass a basic firearms safety test at the gunshop. It's good for five years.

When transporting long guns, they need to be unloaded. When transporting pistols or registered assault weapons, they need to be unloaded and in a locked container.. the trunk counts as a container, however the glove box does not.

Errr, you need an HSC to buy a handgun. No big deal right now... only the stupidest members of the general public might not pass. But wait until they "tighten the requirements" to get one. We allowed them to get a foot in the door towards licensing with BFSC / HSC.

Yea .. i mentioned that after I started writing.

I guess it is kind of a license to buy a pistol.. It's so hokey that I dont even think about it. You're right though.. if they somehow made the test harder, raised the fee, or tightened the requirements somehow, it could put a nasty barrier up.

Right now I think it's just a racket. The test is a joke and the state collects 25 bucks from everyone who takes it. CA is good at putting a fee on anything to collect more money for the state.

While California is a 'may issue' state, the actual decision of issuing is handled by County Sheriffs (and less often city police chiefs). Many sheriffs in more rural counties are basically shall issue. Even in urban Orange County almost anyone with a little preparation can get issued. And any permit is good statewide unless restricted on the permit, which is almost never done.

California should be shall issue. It isn't. But work is being done to change that at the county/city level.

Handguns sold by dealers unless they are consignment have to be on the "california safe handgun list". To keep specific models on the list the manufacturers must pay annual extortion fees. Only the exact model of the gun that is on the list can be sold. For instance a smith & wesson 686 4" revolver has to be the exact current model which I think is a 686-6. A 686-5, or 686-4 or any other 4" 686 is considered unsafe and can't sold by a dealer or imported from another out of state FFL. This is total BS which eliminates alot of nice used handguns. Most dealers by me hardly sell used handguns anymore. Mark
