I've been carrying my M&P .40 during the winter, but now that summer's upon us I'm finding that it's difficult to conceal without a jacket. I'm looking for recommendations for a summer CCW option.

Info on me:
- 6'-0", 155 lbs, not all that easy to conceal a larger firearm.
- Generally wear jeans and a tucked in T-shirt in the summer. Very occasionally I'll wear an open button-up shirt over the T-shirt, I concede that I may have to make an overshirt more common if I want to carry in the summer.

I'm considering:
- Bersa 380: Small, light, good reputation, less expensive, .380.
- Sig P232: Small, light, stellar reputation, but more expensive and still .380.
- CZ-82: Damn near impossible to break, stellar reputation for reliability, no worry about putting wear on the gun, heavier and larger than the above two, 9x18 can be hard to find though.
- CZ RAMI: 9mm, very well regarded, double-stack magazine makes the gun wider and harder to conceal.
- Kahr P9: 9mm, very well-regarded, thin single-stack magazine, lighter, maybe too light. I have problems with the M&P sub-compacts and getting a good grip, unsure about the Kahr because of that, it's also the most expensive.
- Snubnose Revolver: .38 special means I already have ammo in this caliber, they fit my hands well, I can shoot them well, but the cylinder may make printing a problem, and with +P they tend to jump a little more than I like.

Of all of them, I think I like the Sig the most, though the Bersa fit my hands nicely as well. I love the RAMI too, but I think it may be a little wide for summer carry. Because I don't get a good grip on the subcompact 9mm M&P, I'm not sold on subcompact polymer guns, just because they don't seem to weigh enough for me to be confident with them. I'm fine with a snubbie revolver, but I'm thinking that the barrel would make it uncomfortable to carry and more difficult to conceal.

Advice? Comments? Am I thinking too much?

What about the Walther PPS? 9mm is actually cheaper than .380 ammo and more effective...it's a slim little gun.

Wear your shirt un-tucked. Its amazing what you can hide. Otherwise, I vote for the snubnose. My 642 conceals just fine in my front pocket, even with the larger Pachmayr Decelerator grips.

I just got my Bersa .380 yesterday, and it seems like it will fit a niche in my carry arsenal quite nicely. I don't have a permit yet (it's processing), but carried for years, years ago, when I was a LEO. Favorites for summer carry were my Walther PPK/S, which I don't have anymore, and my Undercover .38, which I do still own and will carry at times.

I carry the sig P239 little bigger than the P232. I do know people that carry the bersa and the sig there are very good guns and little easier concealed. Also might want to think about a Walther pps. Also do you carry in side the pants or a paddle holster?

J frames are ideal for carry in summer. I carry mine on my ankle or iwb. you can also pocket carry, but i would think that ankle or iwb would be best for you. I have a friend who is about your build and he carries his sig 226 iwb in a comptac iwb tuckable holster. I think if you wear button down shirts that arent tucked in you could conceal your m&p quite well with that holster, just a matter of comfort i guess.

Depends on the situation. In general I carry IWB unless I'm hiking or OC-ing (generally the two coincide), but I will occasionally use the paddle holster for comfort in the winter. The issue with IWB is that, being as skinny as I am, something the size of the M&P tends to dig into the side of my pelvis, which gets uncomfortable after a while. If I have a jacket on, I am free-er in the positioning of the holster and can place it more comfortably, but that makes it print pretty obviously when I'm only wearing a light shirt over the gun.

I have a few thoughts, since you asked. Here they are in no particular order:

~ I looked at a PPS. Felt nice, quite a few problem reports on PPSTalk and PPSForum. Great S&W service, but only 1yr warranty - out for me.

~ Sig - I went with the 239, and as somebody above stated, it's not much bigger than the 232, but it's still going to require IWB/OWB carry, so maybe not much of an improvement for you. If you are cool with IWB, this gun is fantastic!

~ Kahr P9. I have one of these, I don't see it as ideal if you are looking to carry in a pocket, but they are otherwise great. It's 10% thinner than even the PPS! If you are interested in buying it, PM me.

~ Snub. Honestly I think this is your best bet. I pocket carry almost every day (still getting to know the 239). Especially if you plan to carry pocket or ankle, get a light one. I have the M&P340 13.3oz scandium .357 jobby, and it's great - not a range gun for pleasure, but for SD and carry ease - it's nice. The 15oz 442/642 +P is light enough, and a lot less expensive. I'm glad I got the 340, but I can see why some would pick the +P versions.

~ .380acp. On a whim I bought one of the new Ruger LCPs. I don't carry it a ton, because I have the j-frame, but it's been 100% reliable, and actually shoots quite well. Of course with its size, it carries like a pack of matches! I personally can't imagine buying a .380 gun the size of a 9mm. I think .380 is adequate, but why compromise if all else is equal? To me the virtue of .380 is that it can be served up by such a small gun!

Good luck!

Thanks for the feedback Frankly.

No problem with IWB, just need a gun smaller than the full-size M&P if I don't have a jacket. Definitely not considering pocket carry, anything larger than a money clip in my pocket is annoying (I even have issues with today's larger keyless entry fobs).

If .380 is acceptable to you, you might consider (I am considering this, for the same reason and season) a Ruger LCP, and or Kel-Tec P3AT. The Ruger seems slightly (only slightly) more refined than the KT, though KT has a great warranty and reputation for service, a dedicated cadre of owners, etc. I understand about not liking a smaller gripped pistol, but if you haven't tried those two, you might (only might) be surprised; they fit my hand better than they look like they would.

If you're 6'0, I think a Kahr PW9 would be quite concealable; I (as of lo this very morning -- http://thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=376768) have one of these, and I am *very* favorably impressed with the ergonomics, even after paying for it ;) (No cognitive dissonance just yet.)

Your method of carry with IWB holster, tucked in T-shirt and an unbuttoned untucked outer shirt is how I carry here in Ava, Mo. It's much hotter and humid here then seattle and I know. I spent over 16 years in and around Seattle. It works well. Just have to watch the wind blowin' your shirt tail up...

Most of the range reports I've seen on the LCP have not been positive. They range from poorly chambered barrels to broken guns in under 50 rounds.

IMO, the Ruger won't be worth looking at for another year or so.

Try using a Crossbreed Supertuck IWB holster.

I can carry my G27 easily and have a shirt tucked in over it.

I noticed you made no mention of holsters. They're a big deal.

I've been concealing a big, thick, heavy Sig 226 under a lone polo shirt this summer in a Comp-Tac M-TAC, however, my shoulders are six inches wider than my waist.

I would vote for the snubby simply because you can know you'll be able to conceal it any time and any where. I had a S&W 642 on me around the house yesterday when I was wearing nothing more than briefs and running shorts. Having it as a primary and only gun isn't ideal, but having it when it is the only thing you COULD carry IS ideal.

357, are you absolutely tied to jeans? I switched from jeans to cargo pants to get a looser fitting style so I could pocket carry. I just find IWB too uncomfortable (I'm not skinny, though!). Most cargo pants have enough pocket (no, I don't use the cargo pocket for CCW) to hide my SP-101 or Ultra Carry II. I just found a pair of cargo pants at Duluth Trading Co (firehose pants) that have huge front pockets. Anyway, good luck with your quest!

My new Kel Tec PF-9 is getting carried more than anything else when I am outdoors. It disappears in an Uncle Mikes Pocket Holster in anything I have on so far. 8 rounds of 9mm in a light, flat, firearm is hard to beat and at the price I got it for...well it is perfect for my needs.

For summer concealed carry, I carry the Kahr PM9 in a high rise straight drop holster, by rusty-c-sherrick. It works perfectly for me. I also have the sig p230
but it is .380 and I much prefer the 9mm.

Have you considered the M&P compact? The 9 is very easy to carry.

It is definitely easy to carry. However, I am not anywhere close to accurate with it. I just can't seem to find a good grip with the compact model (I absolutely love my full-size though).

In the end, I went looking this morning and Wade's had a P230 SL with box, books, and a second magazine that they gave me a very nice deal on. The trigger and grip won me over. Given the overall shape of the weapon, I'd be surprised if it had more than 100 rounds through it. It simply did the same thing that my M&P .40 and my S&W Model 19 did: felt "right" in my hands.

I had a chance to use the P9 and CW9, but the grips just didn't fit right.

Thanks to all for your input. It's only a matter of time before I add a subbie though. :)
