In my Church the adults are expected to help out and make sure everything works right, and I was recently made an assistant to the 11 year old Sunday School teacher. Today was my first day in the class (since I was eleven that is ), and the lesson was on making good choices.
The teacher was giving an object lesson, and had covered things like not watching too much TV, being nice to your siblings, etc., when he suddenly pulled out a 500 count box of .22 shells. Before I know what's going on the lesson has gone into safe gun handling!
When one kid said you shouldn't play with a gun unless you make sure it's unloaded the teacher pointed out that every gun should be treated as loaded, regardless of if you checked it. When one asked if it's ok to shoot burglars the teacher replied, "you should call 911 first, and you need to talk to your parents about what you should do after that."
It only took up about five minutes of the class, but it was definitely one of the more interesting lessons I've had in Church in a long time! Certainly not what I was expecting this morning!
