Support CCW in Illinois AGAIN on July 8th--Next Winnebago Cty Meeting

Yeah, it's really not very well-connected to the CCW issue (not as well as I'd like it to be, in the public mind.) People just hate Blagojevich, and most of the Democrats hate him as much as the Republicans. As it regards guns . . . . smart money at the moment is on Lisa Madigan, currently the Attorney General and the daughter of the House Majority Leader, Mike Madigan, to run to replace Blagojevich next time. She can probably beat him if she plays her cards right, but she's no better on gun-control issues than he is. Maybe worse, since she seems to get a lot more done than he does.

I don't have much use for M. Madigan stemming from my time in Illinois - born there to 1982 except for college and a stint in the Army.

I remember him as anti-2A and anti-downstate. From what I know of his daughter she is more repressive on 2A rights and has ambition to spare.

Unfortunately, Smithiac had to work and couldn't make it, but my son went with me and we had a ball. Unfortunately, I think we set the distance record, and we ended up rolling home a little after 4:00 this morning.

I didn't meet anyone from THR, unfortunately, but it was a good time. The crowd was large and well-behaved; I have video of most of the speakers, but I don't know that I got very good audio, unfortunately. There had to be at least 30 speakers in favor of CCW and only two who spoke against it, with each of the speakers in opposition acknowledging most of the reasoning behind CCW but simply expressing fear at the idea of "guns on the street." The sheriff of Winnebago County spoke at length, explaining that he is not opposed to concealed carry and will let the courts sort out the legality of the ordinance . . . . and according to members of the county board, two members who had been opposed have now switched to our side. It looks like the CCW ordinance should pass easily, and then comes the longer and harder part of dealing with the state in court.

I was in the car from noon to 5:00 getting there and then from 9:00 p.m. to 4:00 a.m. (including nap time) getting home, and I think my brain decided that "unfortunately" was a really neat word that just doesn't get used enough.
Then I made fun of myself, but not in a mean way. All in good fun. ;)

OK, we did a great job the first time. Now we need people to pack one more meeting on June 24th. This time public comment will not be allowed, so you don't have to feel any pressure to speak. Just show up, fill seats and make it clear that we're not going away empty-handed. I'm going, are you?
Details at IllinoisCarry --and if you're interested in CCW in Illinois, make sure you join up. IllinoisCarry is the grassroots getting things done in Illinois.

Thanks, Dakuda. Glad you were on the ball even if I wasn't.

The meeting will now be on Thursday the 26th at 5:30, but it's down the street from the Memorial Hall where the public meeting was held. Click on Dakuda's link to find out all about it.

The green buttons should be available at the meeting; if you can't make it there, just go to www.illinoiscarry.com and start a thread. We'll take care of you if we can.

Not much, apparently. I got delayed by construction on I-39 and was parking my car at 5:22. By the time I got out and around the building, I ran into "Hodgie" from IllinoisCarry, who informed me that the subcommittee meeting had already been adjourned.

Apparently our side had the house packed, no empty seats and a row or two of people wearing green buttons. That's good news, since the evening news was there. I wasted a four-hour drive, but that was my own fault. I stopped off at Darnall's Gun Works in Bloomington and a couple of other places. They were really cool about SAFR fliers and getting the word out.

Discussion ended Thursday with preliminary approval for a referendum this November on concealed carry. A county subcommittee unanimously voted in favor of a ballot question asking Winnebago County voters the following yes-or-no question. Should the general assembly enact legislation to permit the carrying of concealed firearms? Those on the subcommittee feel there's strong support in the community for this measure, and if it passed, they'd send that support onto Springfield in hopes of the legislature authorizing concealed carry statewide. "What we want to do is send a message to our people in Springfield that this is basically a grass roots effort, the support is there, Illinois wants to see it. So we're going to keep the ball rolling," Winnebago County Board Member Tom Owens said. The subcommittee also discussed reaching out to other Illinois counties and getting them on board with referendums too. The ballot question proposal had a first reading in front of the full county board Thursday night. They're expected to give final consideration in two weeks. Still on the table is the question of supporting concealed carry for Winnebago County alone. And that's still up for debate.

Next Winnebago County meeting is on Tuesday, July 8th. Check IllinoisCarry for more details, but the word is that they'd like to have 30-40 in the seats this time. I'll only be going to this one if my wife wants to visit her parents along the way. Last time I was in the car for over 8 hours and missed the meeting! I can't justify too many trips to Rockford.
