Suppressor on a Garand?

I'm curious, are there any technical issues that would preclude putting a sound suppressor on an M1 Garand? Certainly you'd have to make some sort of muzzle device to hold it, but would it adversely affect cycling? If so, could an adjustable gas plug be enough to make it work, or would it take something more drastic?

Has anyone ever had/seen/used a suppressed Garand?

I've heard of them and seen sketches; not sure if they ever existed, but it wouldn't be harder to suppress an M1 than an M1a, which I have seen photos of being suppressed.

HTH.

I don't think the Garand has but some of the Springfield 03s were fitted with the Maxim 1912 in WW1 and some of the fighting in Mexico.

They make that flash suppressor that replaces the normal gas plug. I guess it might be a similar replacement.

I'd be worried about increased port pressure bending the op-rod.

Doesn't mean it can't be done, heck, it probably has been.

Hmm. I just called AWC Systems Technology (www.awcsystech.com) and asked them about this. The guy who answered the phone said the used to put suppressors on M1s, but the modifications involved were so labor-intensive that they don't do it any more. He couldn't really explain what the modifications were, though. I think I'll try calling Fulton Armory tomorrow.
