Today I saw pictures of rifles with supressors that look like they have covers held on by velcro. Do they serve a purpose while shooting? Has anyone seen this before, or have any info on this?

Yup. Mirage comes with just a few shots, and with a magnified optic, it can be a real problem.

The covers are also a safety thing, as the suppressors get HOT quick too. Not bare skin-friendly, and for quite a time after too.

And if you, you know MOVE with your gun, keeps you from burning your legs.

I personally distrust the heating (who insulated machinery that gets hot) and have seen too many overheat and melt to the can, dislodge under fire, etc. I have a perforated metal shield instead. Helps. Have definitely gone "ouch" a few times but not had burns worth treating and they get to 500° F so that's no joke from safety.

I am not sure I 100% buy the mirage thing either. Sure, they get hot and mirage off the hot suppressor is a thing I have seen, but the barrel contributes also. I went euro mode and have a mirage band on my precision gun for this. Lower magnification DMRs/carbines don't notice the mirage so it's fine.

But yeah, standard thing. Lots of people have suppressor covers and most are fabric, tied or velcro-strapped on, with (theoretically!) grippy anti-fire stuff on the inside.
