Survival weapons

Your brain, some basic skills, correct mindset, and experience gained through trial and error. I believe a weapon is most likely farther down the list than most of us would like to admit.

The essential problem with an open-ended question like this is that it's an entirely open-ended question.

"Weapon" for hunting survival, large critter defense? People defense? In what type of terrain? What type of scenario? For what type of carry (foot, vehicle)? For how long?

Agree with Denis.

Way too open ended to give any sort of useful answer.

Survive what? Being stuck overnight when hunting and get lost? A good coat, a fire starter, and some energy bars in your pack.

What is the best type of survival weapon?

No context means no useful answers. Or, in the words of an old friend, "Could you please be more vague?"

Figure out where you will be and what you will be doing. Choose the best weapon for that place and purpose.

I suggest for most places and uses, a good .22 pistol would be best.

Your best survival weapon is your brain. Protect it, use it, and you can get though most situations.

Survive what?

Just breaking it down into three major categories (rifle, pistol, shotgun), my personal choice would be a shotgun. Good for everything from collecting edible small game, taking large game with slugs, and self-defense.

Beyond that, detailed situational details are necessary.

And true, firearms may be a little over-rated in terms of "necessity" for overall survival. More important might be a good versatile blade, signaling equipment (mirror, whistle, maybe flare cartridges), and reliable, simple fire-starting materials.

Oh, and a couple of extra pairs of dry socks.

And one can never overstate the necessity of wearing CLEAN UNDERWEAR in case you get into a survival accident! :)

My grandmother, who got her Registered Nurse's license about 1900, used to say, "Wear clean underwear. If you get hit by a truck, you want to have clean underwear when you get to the hospital."

And I used to say, "Why? When I see that truck coming, I'm going to ***** my pants anyway!":p

Longtime advice from the "Elders" who passed on before us. :)

Im going to assume he means a firearm that is reliable and that will last for pretty much ever.

I would recommend a 22lr/ 12 or 20 gauge combo. They break down into 3 pieces (easy to pack), are break open (reliable) and can do just about everything you would want to do if you werent out pillaging and getting into hollywood gunfights.

Savage Model 24 comes to mind. Love that gun. Wish id have never sold it. A total hoot for camping/small game hunting.
