Surviving a gunshot wound

Speaking of trauma kits, anyone have a good recommendation for one?

Not sure what the range has that I go to and I usually just bring a basic first aid kit out to the desert.
This one.

But if you're unsure about it, then you would need to take a course as combat lifesaving and generally first aid techniques have changed by a lot. If still unsure, ask me to ask Stephen on who he would recommend to have a vetted instructor teaching that class.

That's some good advice. I will take heed. I turn 35 next month. Eat mostly home food and logged for a living. So my strength and fitness level is above average. But not super athlete level.
Really hate hearing about your ordeal, and hopefully your recovery is quick and the pain level stays manageable with OTC meds. We're all typically our own worst enemy when it comes to healing properly, and nowadays I'm paying the price for my impatience 20+ years ago. Follow the doctors orders, do what the physical therapist tells you and get yourself right. If it takes 3 months, great. If it takes 3 years, oh well. You owe it to your family to be the best version of you.

Approximately 2 weeks ago I was shot in the pelvis by a 7.62x39. By a miracle only one vein needed repaired. The x-rays look like I took a shotgun blast. But the structure of my pelvis is solid. I'm off narcotics already and am getting by on Tylenol and a muscle relaxer. I can gimp around, go to Church, etc. But can't get a straight answer on proposed recovery time.
It looks like target shooting and deer season is going down the tubes. I probably will be switching to squirrel hunting for this year except when my nephew or brother can go with me.
Well my heart goes out to you. Fortunately I have managed to never have been shot. I also do not have an MD following my name. My best guess considering the afore mentioned would be check with your doctor. My own experience with injury is some people seem to heal faster than others. Do not exceed your limits or push yourself. Listen to your doctors and care givers. Again, don't push or your injury will likely push back. If physical therapy is suggested do it! Best wishes for a speedy recovery and slow and easy.

OUCH SOB !. Not an ideal area to injure . Hope all heals as well as can be and you're happy with the final recovery .

One of MY very closest friends some months back was handling a .22 or .22 mag semi auto pistol I believe . It wasn't his and he wasn't familiar with the safety or mag release and had it lying on his lap. Yep went off just missing his Knee cap ,entered in the quad muscle and exited out through The lateral but not before doing damage to his articular cartilage and of course the lateral ligament .

He was LUCKY didn't sever any artery's or take out is patella aka knee cap but was real close . When he was a kid ,his older brother accidentally shot him with his Dad's .38 in the abdomen . He never realized just how lucky he was a 1/2" this way or the other way ,I might not have ever met him . A .38 Smith in a Clamshell holster and two knotheads not knowing any better !.

Wow, prayers to you for a fast and complete recovery!

I’ve had guns pulled on me at work but no one ever fired (thankfully!!). I once shot myself in the left hand with a pellet gun as a kid being stupid and careless. That hurt, but I have never experienced what several of you have. Glad that you all have survived your injuries and recovered.

After having several surgeries for various injuries (mainly my right knee), all I can add is this:
Be patient; take your time with recovery, work well with physical therapy and keep a positive attitude even when it hurts. These will get you back.

It may take more time than you think it should, because another person said they recovered faster or whatever, but remember we are all individuals and everyone heals at their own rate. :)

Keep us apprised so we can cheer you on as you get back to 100%

Stay safe.

Sorry to hear about your injury. I wish you a speedy recovery. Several years ago when I was just a little younger than you I had a nasty 4 wheeler wreck that wrecked my right hand pretty bad. It smashed my middle finger sideways and almost completely amputated my index finger. The docs put it all back together, but being young and impatient, I couldn't just sit around and not use my hands. So it didn't heal right, and after about a year of therapy and multiple operations trying to get it to bend in the middle, I had it amputated before it got done for free at work... Several posters have already said it, but take your time. Be patient and listen to the therapists and doctors. We'll keep you in our prayers. Glad you are still with us.

That's my issue. They said as tolerated. I don't think they realize how hard I push myself in general. So I'm trying to use the as tolerated more like a do be stupid...
At the same time I'm trying to go backwards as little as possible. So I have less of a recovery.

Hope for speedy recovery. I have met a few of my son's Marine buddies who have been shot. The scars were bad, but most wore them like a bad of honor. My son never got shot, but did get blown up and had to wear his friend who got killed on the way back to base. Nasty stuff war.
That's terrible. I'm thankful I've never had to deal with anything like that.

OP: Funny thing, although I don't think most of us have ever met other members in person, because we share a hobby that is not well received by the general public, I believe there is a certain comradeship that forms here.

While I don't know you, I feel genuinely sorry about your situation and wish you a speedy recovery!!

I agree sir. There's quite a few people on here I would really drinking coffee with.
I learned a few things in this.
Number one: Never let someone mess with your gear.
Number two: What is appropriate safety measures by yourself may not be appropriate if someone else is around.
Number three: I've had to learn to learn humility and accept help graciously.
I was always the guy who was looking to help people never expecting to need help myself.
Less that two weeks from the incident. The wound is normal color except for pink where the staples are. My leg is back to the same size as the uninjured one. The wound channel is down to 2 inches deep by 1/4 inch diameter.
I can't complain.

Never been shot, but I've done some stupid things and been in auto accidents (none my fault). First off, best wishes on your recovery and Thank God it wasn't more serious. Second, listen to your body, pushing yourself may make things worse. Third, do your PT when you are cleared for it by your doctors, do it for as long as needed or paid for, and when you are finished with the official PT, get the exercises and stretching your therapist uses and keep doing them until you are back to your normal.

OP, did they put you on Tramadol at all by any chance for any nerve pain? If so, go easy because the T can shrink/permanently dull the nerve endings in other places.

Thank you for that. It was offered. But I just wanted something to help reduce swelling not kill pain.
I have no nerve pain. I'm currently on a mild muscle relaxer and Tylenol. I have taken 2 doses of oxycodone in the last 5 days if I remember correctly. My status is nothing short of a miracle.

After a fairly recent neck surgery, I was given a weeks supply of pain meds and told I'd need to call the Dr for a refill. I still have 4 days worth of the first prescription, and switched to Tylenol as soon as it made the pain bearable. The pain is what makes me recognize my limitations, so I don't want to be pain free. There are other reasons, and you touched on them in an earlier post. Same boat here.
