I don't ever see anyone here say anything about the SVT 40. I have had one for 10-15 years and love shooting it. any tack drivers out there?

A ton of em on gunboards.com a whole forum dedicated to em in fact..

I haven't shot any of mine in a year or so...... too many toys..not enough time maybe I'll go out and play with one tommorow though, thanks for the reminder :)

wish i could afford one. though i have the feeling the mosins would quickly become envious

Nice gun! I happened to but mine before the price shot up! I need to get a gas adjusting tool for it to properly work with light ball. For those people who are afriad to get one because of corrosive ammunition. Forget about it!!![/i} While the rifle itself is hard to disassemble, the gas system is quite easy to take apart and clean. Most of these rifles have been reasenalled in Russia prior to export, so they are in pretty good shape. The exception would be older imports and those captured and used by Finland. I haven;t been able to really evaluate the accuracy of my SVT, as I have alrady mentioned, the problem with light ball ammunition.

ive had mine for over ten months. havne't shot it yet though. definitely not going to be shooting surplus through it. i dont want to have to deal with chasing down every corrosive particle in the gas system of a $900 Kovrov SVT.

Corrosive ammo is fine, is gun, is strong like tractor! Hit target like hammer and sickle!

My favorite rifle bar none. Seems kinda odd people are paying upwards of a thousand and so freaked about shooting surplus through them, though. I put surplus through my DP-28 semiauto and my PSL.

And whoever complains they're complicated to disassemble hasn't done it enough. Lock the bolt back, remove the cleaning rod, remove barrel band, handguards, pull the rod out of the gas cup, pull off gas cup and unscrew tube, close bolt, pop topcover, pull bolt out, pop open the clamshell, and clean.

It's simpler and quicker than a SKS, I feel. No, it's not a FAL, but it's still not that hard.

Vaarok, no man needs 2 SVT-40s.... you should give one to me!!!
Seriously though, I think anyone bitten by the Mosin-Nagant bug dreams of an SVT-40. I've only seen one before and it was way overpriced. But it's one of those guns on my "I WILL own" list.

Mine is a 1941 Tula, no import marks, AVT-stocked I believe and laminated with no dings or scratches, 4-hole muzzle break, all matching except magazine, not a Finnish or German capture, mint bore, and all for $475 when I got it 4 months ago :D

A few years back I held an all matching one in my hand with a $250 pricetag on it. And me with $50 in my wallet waiting for the next paycheck. By the time I got back there with the loot she was gone.

You forgot to mention the part where you have to push off the barrel band from all sides evenly until it gives way, take off the handguard and then hold the rod back while you unscrew the gas piston from the gas cup and then do the same process reversed once more to put it back on.

There's absolutely no way. On the SKS it's open the latch, pop the handguard off and presto, there's your gas system. I love my SVT-40, but to not label it a Rube Goldberg Machine is quite innacurate.

Sadly quite a bit of Shellac came off on the right side of the stock. I don't know why this is. I was taking it out of the safe to peruse it for any signs of uncleanliness after the range and there was a spot of shellac missing on the side. This also happened to my M39 as well. I believe some foam cleaner dripped out and dried on it. :cuss:

Interesting story... The first time I stripped one I pulled the top cover forward and lifted it up... WHAMMO! Mainspring lodged in the webbing between thumb and forefinger... Never did that again..
