Without knowing who/where this gun came from (bought at auction from TX DA), What areas of wear/deferred maintenance should I look for??

I just gave it a good cleaning and all looks o.k. There was some rust or corrison around the extractor but it cleaned up fine. I didn't remove the extractor but am wondering if I should (and how to do it).

Thanks for your help.

Standard autoloading wear points. If there is excessive wear on the frame and/or the slide rails, you may have problems. The barrel's lockup point (on the muzzle shouldn't have excessive wear, nor should there be any cracks on the frame where the slide meets the frame.)

Replace both the recoil and firing pin spring with those of standard power, until you determine what ammunition you'll be using. You may then adjust the "power level" of these items accordingly.

Remove the stocks and look for cracks in the frame around the pin holes. Sometimes it happens, especially if someone was not careful when they removed the pins for whatever reasons.

Look for peening of the rear of the recoil spring tunnel in the slide and the impact surface of the frame.

Look for wear on the slide and frame rails.

Look for rounding of the edges of the locking lug recesses in the slide.

Look for excessive wear around the outside of the barrel muzzle.

Look for rounding of the edges of the barrel locking lug.

Check the chamber end of the barrel rifling for erosion.

Check the fit of the slide stop pin in the frame, specifically look to see if the holes in the frame have been battered out of round.

Check the ejector, make sure it has not been bent, chipped or otherwise broken.

Check the extractor hook for chips and nicks.

Use an aerosol spray cleaner to clean the gun from around the extractor.

Check the magazine springs for lost tension.

Change the recoil and firing pin springs.

Wheh! That's all I can think of right now!

Thanks gunfan & stans,

I'm going to dive in and dig deeper today and see "what I got a hold of".

I'm anxious to go shoot and see how it feels. I bought this to keep my DE and RZ company.

Any recommendations for a good mag source/brand if not SW?
