This guy locally is selling a nib sw 22a 4inch for $250. I dont really know anything about them, i had my eyes set on a ruger mk2/3 but since im not 21 i gotta do private sales and have limited choices. So i am here to ask is this a decent price and does this have any major problems. I heard about a recall but didnt quite know what it was really about.

It's a decent price but if I were you I'd stick with the Ruger or Buckmark. The 22A is a decent rimfire starter gun but is a distant 5th to the Buckmark, Ruger, SIG Hammerli and other 22s.

I'm not exactly sure why docnyt feels that the 22A runs a distant 5th in .22lr handgun options as it is the one gun in my collection that I will not part with. It is just too much fun and reliable. I'm sure that the others that he mentions are fine handguns but I have read too many horror stories about the field stripping procedures and lost springs and small parts to venture into these higher priced headaches. I've added an inexpensive Barska red dot scope to it and take it to the range every week. It shoots well and shoots every time. Price might be a little on the high side but if you don't have to pay sales tax and ffl fees, not too bad. Cabela's often has them for $199.

I own a Smith and Wesson 22A and it's a good little plinker or beginner pistol for target shooting.

If you can get one at the right price there is no reason not to buy it.....

IMO $250 is too much to pay for a used Smith and Wesson 22A. When I bought mine in 2006 it was $199+ Tax (brand new).

I just bought one( 5.5") a couple of months ago NIB-$199+ tax. It has been 100% with about 400 rds at the range.

i also have a 22a, and i must say i love the dang thing, it always works, and so far i have not found any ammo it won't eat. it just flat works and is darn accurate too(i also have a few other 22 pistols) and i shoot it the most. i also paid 199.99 for mine new.

thanks

I loved mine, but unfortunately life dictated that I sell it. I'd buy one again, but I'd probably talk the guy down to $225-$230.

The 22A is a decent rimfire starter gun but is a distant 5th to the Buckmark, Ruger, SIG Hammerli and other 22s.

No the Rugers are a distant fourth to the M22A, Buckmark, and Neos (we've got them all). The SIG Hammerli is in a different league altogether.

Of the four the Rugers are by far the least reliable -- not that they are jam-o-matics, but they have 2-3X the stovepipe and click no bang frequency of the others.

I have one that I bought on a whim when I was home last R&R wife liked it so much she has it now I will buy another. These things flat out shoot. If I felt like diging through my foot looker I would scan the last target she shot.
I would use for IHMSA small bore in a heart beat.

I've shot a well beat up rental 22A for a couple of thousand rounds. They finally retired it but not before it was fed more ammo in about 2 years than any private owner would feed their gun in about 2 lifetimes. And factor in the issue of rental ranges where they only clean and service the guns when they stop working and you may get the idea that it's not as bad a gun as some folks make it out to be.

The price for used is way too high though. I'd suggest printing out the Cabela's page along with any other pages you find where it's priced at $199 to $225 new. Then use these to talk the guy down to about $160 to $175 at most. If he doesn't want to deal be patient. Another will come by soon enough. There's tons of them out there.

I've had mine for a few weeks and I had one ftf. My fault though. Extremely accurate and fun to shoot. I paid 250.00 for mine.

Save up a little more (not much more!) and get a Ruger Mark II/III or Browning Buckmark. You won't be dissappointed.
