I carry a 642 and a Kahr PM9 and I used to carry the P3AT, which I believe is similar to the Ruger. Both the .38 and the .380 take more practice than many other weapons. The 642 really pounds the palm as well.
If there's any way you can bump up to a Kahr PM9, you will gain greater comfort, greater ease of shooting, hotter rounds and will find it easier to shoot accurately.
