They're not exactly equal, but comparable.
S&W - pretty nice trigger, probably a little better than the PX4 (which I own). Ergos are very comparable with one exception; controls.
The controls are somewhat dictated by the type of pistol we're talking about.
The Beretta is a traditional double action (DA/SA) with either a manual safety or with the low profile controls, decocker only. Mine has been flawless in about 2400-2500 rounds.
The S&W has low profile controls stock, including an ambi slide stop or slide release depending on who you talk to - and I do not comment on it here, other than to make the distinction. It's a striker fired gun whereas the PX4 is a hammer fired model.
The mechanical safety or decock lever of the Beretta is located on the slide, easily reached with average sized hands. The slide release or stop is in the usual place, not ambidextrous.
I have only dry fired the M&P, but would estimate trigger pull at around 6 pounds, ok reset, nothing to brag about, and take up no better or worse than competitors.
I have fired the PX4 quite a bit, and it is very accurate, however the trigger is something to consider. I would estimate the double action on the PX4 to be on the order of 10-11 pounds, very smooth. Single action I would estimate about 4.5 pounds, but, there is a lot of takeup. Even so, I find it easy to make follow up shots.
If you consider the thing on the frame which locks the slide back a slide release, the Beretta has the advantage. If you consider it a slide lock, neither does, but the M&P has low profile controls which could "keep them out of your way" - some shooters have inadvertently 'gripped' the lever in question suppressing the 'last shot hold open' of various semi auto pistols.
One thing the M&P has that the Beretta does not - a magazine safety. Whether you consider this a feature or a bug, it is what it is.
Price wise they are both comparable, with deals to be found on each.
