I have never been a knife enthusiast, I usually just carry an old folding box cutter in my pucket for opening boxes at work. But I received an email for a S&W branded 6" folding knife that was free for just covering the $6.95 shipping. I thought WTH.... spent the cost for the shipping and 3 weeks later here it is. Quite impressed for the cost. Not sure of the type of steel, and best part is it does not have any foreign markings/stamps on it. all it has on the blade is the S&W logo, with name and extreme ops on it. Yay, no "made in china or tiawan":)

later found it here...https://store.smith-wesson.com/tact...reme-ops-liner-lock-folding-knife/SWA24S.html

Which would have been the dead "give away" to folks here that you were getting a cheap Chinese knife. Potentially worse, it could be a knockoff of a cheap SW Chinese knife. The 3 week shipping is typical for direct from China (which S&W wouldn't do). Also, the MSRP on an actual S&W A24S is $22. Dealer price on it would be $11 and "distributor" about $7.50. Big companies are buying them around that price so they can afford to sell them for $12-$14 and still make money on volume "sale" pricing. The shipping direct from China that you paid is actually about $2-$3 out of your $7 leaving $5 to the company. That's not encouraging for getting a real S&W Chinese manufactured SWA24S being about what WalMart and Amazon would pay to S&W. You can get the same knife on ebay at Buy It Now pricing of $9 which is another tell on counterfeit knives.

What did the box it came in look like?

Caveat Emptor or "Anything too good to be true usually is".

I'll be the bearer of bad news. Blade steel is 7Cr17MoV, and that knife is made in China. Blade HQ sells them for $13.

Yeah, I get those emails all of time for free tote bags, flashlights, holsters, etc just for the supposed cost of shipping.

I don’t read any further, just delete them.

But I have to admit, sometimes they are quite tempting….. but I know better.

Everyone's knife journey should, and usually does, begin with inexpensive blades, because they will be beaten up, horribly scarred, notched, bent or broken as they teach us how to care for them and use them properly. Some will find out what works and what does not, some will learn the hard way or will listen to those that did, others will never catch on and will just buy a new cheap one or try to borrow yours. That is why we keep the knives we have outgrown; so we can bestow them on those who do not speak the language.

When we can appreciate the difference in materials and craftsmanship, we will be more likely to understand what goes into the making of a fine knife or axe, and they will be more valuable to us.

You should have stayed where you were. Although a cheap Chinese “knife” ($9.00 at Wally), I don’t care about blade steel, when it goes bad I just replace the blade (always sharp). I’ve carried this thing in my pocket for at least 7 years. It has done everything I’ve asked of it. b5eced4b2b3cda316488ccf0ebea02e7-large.jpg

I bought a box opener/razor knife to use around the house. My wife now carries it in her purse!

She likes it better than a standard knife and if anyone asks, she can explain it away better than a knife.

The blade is retractable so she doesn't have to worry about cutting herself. Something to think about if your wife doesn't want to carry a real knife.

When it gets dull, you can flip the razor blade around or replace it.
