Swapping barrels in an XD (.40 to 9mm)

I'm purchasing an XD .40 5 inch shortly. (SSP gun)

Somebody told me that you can put a 9mm barrel in the .40, and even using the same magazines, you can run 9mm reliably through the gun.

Now this doesn't seem possible to me because the breach face is a different size. Wouldn't the extractor be in the wrong place for the 9mm case? Or am I missing something?

I know how the .40 mags work with 9mm, and apparently the external dimensions of the two barrels are the same, but I just can't wrap my brain around how the extractor is going to work.

So was the information I was given incorrect?

It can be done with a conversion barrel available at xd-gear.com. I have an XD-357 Sig (Service or 4" barrel length) and have added the 9mm conversion barrel ($150.. plus shipping of course). Works perfectly.

I suggest you go for it. Soon...But at least before the State IDPA match, www.udpl.org , maybe then I could at least place better than you, what with you preforming all those clearance drills and all.... Seriously though, I can't see how it would work reliably...

EFK. Readily available at xd-gear.com. Works perfectly. Simply switch barrels and shoot 9mm. Very simple. Did buy a 9mm magazine for it to be safe but it feeds and fires fine with the 357 Sig mags and holds more rounds. Can also get a 40 barrel for my XD-357 Sig as well and have 3 calibers for it.

But I need a .40. I've got to do something with the 10,000 pieces of .40 brass I have in my basement.

The only available barrel I could find to convert my XD 40 to 9mm was from EFK. They said no other modifications were needed for it to function properly. I never ended up ordering it since I reload 40s now.
