Swords as serious combat weapons in today's world?

Having had limited bayonet training in the US Army 1972, along with 460 meter rifle work. (Most of the target were closer. 25 meters to 460 meters, with the 175 to 100s usually most engaged.) Use of the M-16A1 as a substitute for a spear was problimatical, with an annyoing tendency for the weapon to break at the recoil spring tube ring.

The last wide issue of a sword type weapon, was the British Smachet in WWII. Sort of a Roman short sword, but with a heavier blade, double edged with a thick blade.

Who admits carrying a Gerber Mk 2 or Mk 1 on field exercises, but the Swiss Army Knife saw much more use.
