Was thinking about replacing the wooden stock on my 700 BDL Varmint with something synthetic. Suggestions? After looking I don't see to many for the heavy barrel in long action.

H-S Precision makes a very strong stock with aluminum bedding block in the varmint contour for the 700 long action.

I'd like to keep the price around $200 or there abouts.

"best" is hard to judge unless we know what you're going to be using it for. if it's for hunting, i'd say the B&C Standard Medalist is best because it maintains the weight and feel of a typical hunting rifle and still had a nice aluminum bedding block.

if it's for bench work there are oodles of choices in the "tactical" and "Varmint" styles that are heavier, but sturdier and more ergonomic. the B&C medalist is a great all around choice...

Manners stocks are probably the best out there right now. Bell and Carlson is by far the best value. HS Precision won't get any of my money for soliciting endorsements from a murderer, and then telling outraged customers to go take a flying leap.

I do want to keep the traditional stock so I was thinking of a B&C Medalist, but I didn't see one for long action heavy barrel.

The rifle is used for range and varmint hunting.

What caliber are we talking? When did Remington make a heavy barreled "long action".

I have Remington 700 Senderos in .308 and .25-06, and from what I understand the factory stocks are HS Precision. They are very nice.

Remington makes (or uses) a very good synthetic stock <http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/templates/links/link.jsp;jsessionid=OEYIRBH2OJZJPLAQBBJCCO3MCAEFGIWE?id=0005386226047a&type=product&cmCat=perf&rid=0987654321&cm_mmc=Performics-_-CSE-_-shopping-_-20016148&mr:referralID=d0d71648-0ee2-11df-a274-000423bb4e79&_requestid=158538&_requestid=160004>

This is a .25-06 BDL Varmint Special bought new in 1978. Why they ever quit offering it is beyond me. I think it was brought out with metalic silhouette shooting in mind. Not sure if it is the only long action VS or not.

I remember when I bought it, the VS was available in .222, .223, .22-250, .243, 6mm, .25-06, 7mm-08 and .308. Wisely I chose the rifle in .25-06 and have never regretted that decision.

I've had this one so long that I had to replace the barrel.

I like the HOGUE. Got one on a Rem 223 Its nice in cold weather. Helps with the grip of the gun when you have gloves on.

Do some research on stocks with bedding blocks. When those fit your particular receiver as nearly perfect as possible, you take a big step toward removing error in the system. But not every aluminum block is the same. Just because it advertises Aluminum Bedding Block doesn't mean it's good.
