I have had an Encore for about 6 years and only have the 50 Cal. barrel for it. I am thinking of purchasing a 45/70 barrel for it. How accurate are the T/C barrels, or should I buy an after market one?
In my experience the T/C factory barrels have been VERY accurate. The only reason I would bother with an aftermarket barrel is if they are either cheaper or offering a chambering you can't get from T/C. I do have one of the $180 Spanish made Bergara barrels in 30-06 that shoots VERY well.
I am pleased with the accuracy from my T/C .45-70 barrel, and the .50-cal muzzleloader barrel I bought the rifle with. If the TC barrel is available in a caliber and length you like, go for it. Now I'm seriously considering a 24" .270 for mine, in factory TC trim, though the 28" ProHunter barrel is pretty neat too.
The EABCO carbine barrel I bought for my G2 is outstanding, in terms of accuracy. I'll pass on launching a 45-70 out of a Contender, however . . . took one shot with one in a TC pistol once . . . killed at one end, wounded at the other, IMHO. I must be getting old . . .
