Also, is it true to say that an Encore cannot shoot rimfire but the G2 can?
Yeah, I don't think they offer a rimfire barrel for the Encore.
Can Encore rifle barrels work on a G2?
No. And, G2 barrels will not fit the Encore frame. The G2 will accept the older contender stuff, though.
I'd like a G2 so I have the rimfire option (and de-cock without opening the action) but it looks like the Encore has many more desirable rifle barrel options!
The Encore is quite heavy, built heavy to shoot high pressure modern rifle rounds. I prefer the contender/G2 myself as I have little use for a .30 06, say, in a pistol. If I wanted it as a rifle, maybe I'd go Encore, but as a pistol I much prefer the contender/G2 and also because I wouldn't wanna do without a rimfire barrel.
Only thing I can see about the sold as rifle/pistol thing is that the pistol takes a background check and the rifle don't. This may be a little less than high road, but how the heck are they gonna know and why would they care if a game warden stops you in the field? I mean, do you think the ATF keeps records of you ordering a pistol barrel and grip, then look up in a data base to see if you have a contender frame and what it's registered as? Even if they had that capability, why would they waste their time on you?
It's an unenforceable law is all I'm saying. I bought mine as a pistol and it was before there was a background check. If I'd gotten it as a rifle, would it matter? I don't know, don't lose sleep over stupid stuff like that. The only thing that's going to get you in trouble in the field is if you've got a rifle stock on a 10" .30-30 and a game warden stops you. Then, you could be in deep do do.
Anyway, is this registering thing something your state does or do you mean putting it on the BATF forms? There's no gun registration in Texas, no permits to own or buy, and if you have a CCW, no background check. But, I realized how socialistic some of the east and left coast states are.
