Looking at getting my first big game rifle. I like the venture but noticed someting interesting. Blued 270s get a 24" barrel but the weathershield 270 gets a 22" barrel. The weathershield 30-06 gets a 24". Now I am leaning toward the 30-06 again because i want the weathershield and cost and availability of ammo. Will the 2" be noticable? Will be used for deer and hogs to start.

I'd contact TC to double check. Typos are not unusual. They also show the 270 and 300 WSM with 22" barrels on the Weathershield model. I can see 270 or 30-06 being either way, but a magnum round with a 22" barrel would be rare.

I wouldn't sweat the diference in a 270 or 30-06 regardless of 22" or 24" barrels. It is really about how the gun looks and balances to you. There is a much greater difference between individual guns with equal barrel lengths than 2" of barrel makes. It wouldn't be unheard of to see individual 22" guns shoot faster than another gun with a 24" barrel.

30-06 for this reason....you can shoot 100 grain bullets up to 220 grain bullets.A wide selection compared to a 270(max 180 grain). I own two T/C Ventures you will not be disappointed.Trigger is adjustable but both came set at 3.5 lbs from factory according to my trigger pull gauge. You can back off up to 5 lbs.Enjoy :D

With .30-06 you can also get commercial ammo that has about the same ballistics as .30-30. The power range of .30-06 is very impressive, IMO, and this is why I opted for it. I bought a Savage Axis which has a 22" barrel but I would have been fine with a 24"... either way.

I prefer the .270 Winchester over the 30-06. A little less recoil. and a nice choice of factory ammo. Unless you live in Grizzly country and require a 200 gr Nosler Partition load, the .270 Win with 150 or 160 gr Nosler will handle anything you would tackle with an '06 and 180 gr bullets, while kicking you less. If you handload, the .270 is a pretty fair varmint cartridge with 90 gr Speer TNT's at 3400 fps. I love my .270's, a standard Marlin XL7 in .270 Win, and a pair of Winchester Model 70's in .270WSM. And I agree with other posters that 2" of barrel isn't than big a deal. My .270WSM's have 24 inch tubes while the Marlin does just fine with a 22".

I own a 30.06 and have hunting buddies that have .270's and have shot them. That being said where are you hunting? If you are on the east coast(thick woods) I would opt for the 30.06. If you live in the midwest or western part of the country I would probably go for the .270. If you live in near Grizz country It would be the 30.06. The .270 is fast and up close where the speed is high the bullets may break up on twigs, limbs, weeds, briars. If you live in thick country I would use the 180 grain 30.06 bullets. If you live in open country I would pick the 24 inch barrel, thick country, the shorter 22 inch barrel. I would bet they make both calibers in both lengths.

Obviously both would serve you well so I won't even comment on that.
I will say, whatever decision you make, I wouldn't let the performance difference that 2" in barrel length will make factor into the decision. It simply isn't enough real world, on game difference to matter.

Filp a coin.

I have taken more deer with a 270 than any other caliber, but if I had one caliber to hunt everything in North America it would be. 30-06. Two inches of barrel is not going to make a dimes bit of difference in performance. You might lose 50 or 60 fps by dropping 2" off of the barrel.

either will do just fine, and the bbl length difference is only a matter of preference. i typically prefer shorter bbls. and my 30-06 is 22". i like the 30-06 for the great availability of a wide variety of factory ammo if i should need to purchase instead of handloading.

but if I had one caliber to hunt everything in North America it would be. 30-06

+1

If you do your part, the '06 will take anything in North America, including big brown bears.
It's been said over and over, by a lot of folks - if you can only have one hunting rifle, the .30-'06 is where it's at.

I got an email back from T/C and their website is wrong. The weathershield 270s have 24" barrels too.

Capt I had my 223 venture recalled ,turned around in a week ,good customer service. My 7mm-08 was post recall. They put a red star onthe box label indicating it was fixed before leaving factory. Also you remove the bolt and they stamp an asterix in receiver indicating the fix....Don
