Anyone ever take any classes from this place? Now that Thunder Ranch has moved a little north of Texas :), I don't know where to go for classes.

I was considering one of the intermediate carbine classes, or maybe a handgun class later in the year.

Anyone have any experience with these folks?

Thanks as always.

Hey SIGman,

I have never been there myself, but a buddy of mine went there and shot the 1000 yard qualifier. To use the 1000 yard range at TacPro, you have to take a class and demonstrate proficiency, meaning that at 1000 yards you have to shoot a three shot group less than 2 MOA (twenty inches or less at 1000). He said that the head guy there is a former member of the British Royal Marines (for real), and has probably forgotten more about guns that most of us will ever know (his words, and my buddy is a damn good shot with anything that has a trigger). Anyway, he said that it was worth the trip, he learned bunches of stuff about 1000 yard shooting, he qualified to use the 1000 yard range, and he enjoyed it a bunch. My buddy's equipment: Stock Remington 700 Sendero in .300 Winchester Magnum, 3 pound trigger, Harris bipod with Protektor rear bag, 6.5-20 x 50mm Leupold LR with Leupold Mk 4 rings and bases, shooting Federal Gold Medal Ammunition with 190 grain Sierra Matchkings. His best group from prone, three shots, at 1000 yards, 7.5 inches. Not too shabby I think for his first time at 1000 yards with basically a bone stock rifle and factory ammo.

Anyway, here is their website if you haven't been there already: http://www.tacproshootingcenter.com/

Also, on your way home, at the corner of Hwy 108 and I-20 there is a great restaurant called The Smokestack. It is easy to spot, there is a big smokestack in the front parking lot :). Great food, especially the steaks and Chicken Fried Steaks. Very much worth a stop on the way to the house.

I've taken Primary Pistol and Intermediate Pistol at Tac-Pro Shooting Center and am scheduled to take Primary Carbine later this year. I would have no problems recommending their instruction to anyone and have recommended it for my own family.

The facilities are some of the best in North Texas and they are always being improved. Add to that that Bill Davison has experience as a Royal Marine Commando, SBS, Counter-Revolutionary Warfare Instructor (CQB), 10 years professional experience working protective details and recent Iraq/South Central Asia experience (returned in February 2005) and I think you'd be pleased with the return on your investment. As Ashley Emerson put it, this is one of the few ranges that was paid for by money earned gun-in-hand.

I'd also add that he is simply a good instructor as well. He is able to diagnose problems quickly and he can explain WHY he is teaching you to do it a certain way in great depth. Add to that, he has some pretty good stories to illustrate his points.

I think they generally prefer you take their entry-level courses before they allow you to take Intermediate-level courses and I know that Davison feels strongly that Primary Pistol is a key course on which all the others are based. Depending on your qualifications they may be willing to make an exception; but I wouldn't count on it.

I'll second that recommendation and add that it has to be the most heavily armed restaurant in Texas. Last time I was in there just visiting the range (February) I think I counted about 15 people I knew were armed.
