Hi guys i Hunt hogs on occasions around some cropping land by myself with a spot light (in Australia no worries legally). More often than not i spot them with the spoty toward the middle of the paddock jump out of the ute and knock them off as they run across the road/track in front of the headlights. However if i could start shooting before they hit the road i would have much better success. My question is what would people here recommend for a barrel mounted flashlight to (hopefully) ID targets out to 100m (if even possible) and how many lumens output would this require. In Australia i can get a Fenix TK11 Q5 for about 130 bucks 60 or 225 lumens output. Does anyone have experience using such flashlights for night shooting and what types of lights are you using?

Thanks in advance

That Fenix is a great light. Buy with confidence.

As for distance, flashlights with bigger reflectors will "throw" farther.

cheers highorder i really only got a few options in aussie mainly Fenix, surefire and wolf-eyes if anyone has herd of them. There are a few other aussie made one but the information is scanty at best. Plus with our gun laws here there are not to many good enthusiast shooting site in aus.

As highorder said, CPF is the end-all, be-all on flashlight geekery - though it's not all that well organized or easy to find statistical type information there.

The Fenix lights are one of two brands a friend of mine recommends (the other being Surefire). $130 looks like a good price to me.

You might also look at a Streamlight TLR-1 or TLR-2 if you've got limited barrel length to contend with. they'll mount on a standard 1913 rail.

At 220 lumens is bright enough for 100 yards, but something to keep in mind is that it'll likely be difficult to 'spotlight' something at that distance w/o a good tight hotspot @ 25 yards.

Look at the Cree R2 LED stuff is light intensity is a higher requirement (though they do eat batteries). You can get 250+ lumens from them. Like someone else said, reflector size/shape can drastically impact the quality of the hotspot and throw of the light, which is important for such things at that distance.

I'm a fan of the cheaper Ultrafire (etc.) lights and assemblies from DealExtreme.com. You can get lights there for a lot less than from 'name brand' places, and for all intents and purposes, LED stuff is going to be good enough for your applications. They don't suffer from the "not gun-ready" problems that plagued pre-LED lamp fixtures due to the solidstate nature of an LED.

CR123A batteries can get expensive if you use the light all the time/often. If you're going to be running through a set of batteries or so a week, I'd look into getting a lamp that is designed to take 18650 cells, and then get some 2500mAh+ cells and a charger for them. You'll save the cost of the light in no time.

I've got an Ultrafire C1 Q5 lamp on my mossy 590 with a pressure switch. The hotspot is tight enough that it serves as a quick aiming device at night for buckshot and the like.

Might I suggest this light?

There are a bunch of mounting options available for under $25 available from many locations.

Hey thanks for all the great information guys i will have a trolls through you suggestions / recommendations tonight particularly in regards to recharge/18650/123.

Cheers,
Brigalow

I'm sorry I can't help directly with your specific question, however I'm a huge fan of Streamlight. I think there is no better quality, FWIW. I've had much better luck with them over all others.

Best of luck...

Rechargable cells are the only practical option for my light needs.

I have standard Li cells for extended (weeks) power outages, but every light I have hits the charger once a month.

Thanks for all the info guys i will look into that suggestion to shaggy, been a bit busy lately so sorry for late reply. I am going to make a decision some time next week on what im getting. Got a mate coming over here hunting in a few days and he is bringing some NV gear for me to try out but im not sure if it is worth all those dollars for the hunting i do on the property so i guess i will wait and see.
