And to keep it totally on topic.... Does any one know if the Swiss Army still has a bicycle core? How do they store thiere rifles during transport? Has any one actualy tried to ride a bike with a rifle? I don't mean the 1950's lolly gag thru the neighbor hood on the way to the swimming hole kind of ride either.

Can't have everything guys . Come on . It has a folding frame , aircraft grade aluminum , and it even hs Tactical in the name .:neener:

I'm with benEzra- what no gun mounts?

and what exactly are 'Military spec. alloy double cage bear trap pedals'?

What's the CAGE number for this thingy?

Like a Marine would ride that thing. Yeah right. The cops in short pants on bicycles are bad enough, but a Marine?

Actually, a mountain bike was one of the vehicles talked about in a military vehicles show I saw some time ago. Dunno if it's real or proposed, but they showed a Marine riding one.

The show also talked about their motorcycles, jeep type vehicles, buggies, etc.

An excellent mode of transportation, for military and civilian. Wonder what these babies cost??

Mountain bikes are my closest next love, after guns. :)

Probably too much. There are other companies out there trying to sell the same thing to the Military for probably alot cheaper.

And whoever said a Marine wouldn't ride one obviously has never humped a pack very far....Any foot soldier welcomes an alternate form of transportation that takes the weight off his doggies!

Hey, TallPine, believe it or not, there are Kevlar bike tires out there.

Soon as my current ones wear out (this Summer), I'll be going that route.

:) I'm sure my bike is as 'special' as that one, loaded with paniers, lights, racks, still weighing less than 29 lbs. Need to double check that.

I thought only the Swiss army ( ??) used bicycles !! No respectable Marine would ride one of those .

Rats, beat me to it.

The Hummer appears to be a pimped up Paratrooper which is a small change from their other full suspension mountain bike.

The advantage to a folding multi-terraine bike is that you can stash it in the trunk of your car for breakdowns or those pesky SHTF/TEOTWAWKI traffic jams.

In reality, we often stashed a bike in the woods at the take-out so that someone could pedal back up the road and get a car for shuttle after we got off the river after a day of white water.

....and what exactly are 'Military spec. alloy double cage bear trap pedals'? ...
-Double cage bear trap pedals are ones that are double-sided (to allow putting your feet on either side) and don't require clip cleats. Yea I know, nothing new but it does bear stating at that price level: typically upper-end bike riders use pedals that are one-sided and have toe clip mechanisms on them to help their feet stay on the pedals--somewhat like ski bindings. The "top" of such pedals is basically smooth--not really made for standing on, and the shoes have a special plastic cleat on them that snaps downward into the pedal and can be twisted out.

- And as I saw it, composite fiber construction basically fell out of favor with the bigger-volume bicycle manufacturers over the last 5-10 years. It is true that you can still buy bike stuff made with it, even frames, but for all the work involved with manufacturing it didn't turn out to be that much better overall than using aluminum or titanium. And metals are easier overall to work with, so many ditched composites entirely.
.........?
And I got off bike riding some years back, but,,,,, those parts don't sound real impressive, and neither is the 29-lb weight.
IF you didn't need the folding feature, you could probably go to WAl-Mart and get something similar for $400 or so--I have seen a mountain bike at Wal-Mart that had dual disk brakes. I was stunned.
The Pro-Flex I have rotting in the shed was a mid-priced full-suspension bike for ~$1000 around 1992, and it weight 26 lbs. The best $1500+ bikes weighed 23-24 lbs.

Ok- I retract my previous statement on the improbability of a Marine riding a bicycle while in full battle dress. Nope I've never had to lug a full ruck outside of camping & hiking in the woods so I guess any opportunity to give a rest to the feet is a good thing.

But a bike has no... style? How about a motorcycle? Or even better one of those half-track motorcycle things the Germans used in WWII?

Now that's STYLE!

Why have soldiers ride bicycles when they could ride motorcycles or 4 wheelers?
Noise seems to be the biggest reason...or lack of noise I should say. Even a motorcycle with a quiet muffler puts off a heck of alot more noise then a mountain bike.....and they require no fuel.
Also, they can be delivered from any platform, whereas a motorcycle or ATV weighs several hundred pounds and will require more equipment to deliver.

Bikes & Style

Let's not get into bikes and style. Check out the world of Road Cycling. 55% Totally BAD A$$ speed , 45% Style. Bicycling Magazine even has a regular colum called "Style Man" or Style Guy" or something like that.

As far as the Tactical aspect, there is a reason that bicycle cops have taken off. They just freakin' work! You can ride right up behind someone and have them off their feet, on the ground, under control before they know what hits them (I've seen it done, and done it more than once). They might not be the ultimate military vehicle, but I can easily see where they have their place.

This particular bike? Well, like my dad has said since I was little, "You get what you pay for". This ain't that much for a bike these days. Go by a bike shop (not WalMart) and check out the middle of the road Mtn. Bikes. This one looks real cheap all of the sudden. I bet it rides the same way. But then again, just like a gun, maintenance is key.

Alright, thats enough for now. I gotta get back to work.

Peace out,
Calhoun
