I've recently run across some very nice blades by Mark Couch out of the blacksmith's shop in Palmer. I picked up a ram's head as a decorative office knife to sit on the book shelf, but found the quality of the cutting edge so good it quickly became a utility knife. Today I picked up an actual utility knife from Mark's little shelf at Northern Knives. The blades on both are 96 layer damascus 15N20/1080. The utility knife has a thickened steel handle and lovely brass pins. The weight is wonderfully balanced and I loved it the moment I held it. I already used it for some quick work on a giant zucchini and some fruit. I will be giving it a more extensive test in a few weeks when the rutabaga come in.

As I understand it, Mark is a smith by trade and does all kinds of custom iron and steel work. This is sort of a side line. But his prices are very low for the quality. The utility knife was around $200 and the other was $175 or so. I really like his style--he doesn't try to hide the metal or make it overly shiny or precious. The work of someone who really loves steel. Not as polished up as some of the custom blades around, but I like it that way.

They're a great shop. A good mix of utility, tactical, fantasy and custom blades. Some vintage folders as well. They have work from at least a dozen local makers for sale most of the time. The real knives of Alaska. If you're in town they're well worth a stop.

It's also worth noting that Northern Knives makes kydex sheaths that are as good or better than any I've seen. The kydex they used making my Busse sheaths is thicker than the stuff Okuden uses, Unlike a mall "knife store" the guys at Northern Knives KNOW the knife trade. They know steel, and handle materials, and what works for a given situation. It's seriously the first knife store I've been in where I didn't know more about knives than the guys behind the counter AND the guys in the back. I used to live in the Alaska bush as a teacher, one time when I came in to Anchorage one of the guys there got several of us from Blade Forums together for an evening of swapping stories and showing off toys.

That's a long story to say if you're a knife nut and you go to Alaska, go to Northern Knives. It's worth the trip.

Oh, and after two years of trying to teach in Wyoming, I've decided there's a reason I live outside the 48 contiguous states. I'm headed back to the Last Frontier in August to teach again. Homeward bound. I'll try to get some good rural Alaska knife use pics to post.
