Talk me out of a Galil

The rear sight is mounted on the receiver cover. I don't like that.

Other than that, it's pretty hard to knock Galils. Awesome gun. Buy it.

Night sights and magazine

Hello again,

2 thoughts:
1) The military issue Galil comes with "night sights" (betalights) as standard issue. There is a single betalight behind the front sight and two mounted in front of the rear sight. The front one is "flipped-up" to replace the regular sights, while the rear sight is rocked back 45 degrees and the beta sight is raised to replace it. These help you to fire reasonably accurately at night. (See attached pics.) The Golani has the sights fitted, but may of the betalights are missing, so be sure to check them carefully if you decide to make the purchare.
2) Although the Golani/Galil mags are made to hold 35- or 50-rounds, they should never be loaded with more than 30- or 42-rounds. The magazine spring gets too tight which results in misfeeds.

Happy hunting...

Thread necromancy as it is, but surely the THR needs it's resident Galil thread, as they are good rifles.

AK action, nontheless doesn't mean automatically that the rifle won't be accurate. Galil AR and SS109 is good enough combo to shoot out an expert rifleman (is that the highest rank? we have different system here) badge @100m. And Galatz and M80 have been good enough to shoot 4 rounds out of 5 into human torso @ 1 click (1000 m), first round was a sighting in shot. To be honest, there have been instances where man with the Galatz have been better than a man with TRG-42 (.338LM cal), out to 800m.

Yeah, the rifle is good, though a bit on the heavy side, and at least the military version has even the integral bottle opener :)

I'm in the process right now to talk me a Galil AR or SAR. We'll see if and when (but pics will follow, if it is going to happen).

And what Rev wrote, night sights are pretty good for the purpose. Though, when you're out on recon patrol at night, the glowing rifle-parts are not exactly something one likes to have. And yes, their glow is seen (I remember spotting more than few from at least some 50 meters away).

After all these years :) Back to life again.

Well , after pondering the Galoni / Galil issue I finally took the plunge.
I got one , A CIA Galoni Sporter LNIB with all three safety positions in Hebrew ( non functioning full auto position) but with a TON of aftermarket gadgets.
Full front quad rail and extended, flash light, red dot and scope. The best part was 11 steel 35 round magaines and 10 Tapco 30s,
I traded all gadgets and returned it to factory specs.
Now I can say it is a bit heavy but not too heavy.
The SR 5.56 Ruger AR is heavier. It too had all the gadgets removed. It came from the same seller.

So far she worked 100% without a hitch with steel cased Wolf ammunition.
I need to check the elevation sighting at 100 yards since I only fired it at 25 so far. The tool is on the way for this from evilbay.
Any information on the Hebrew markings would be appreciated.
The Steel mags are a bits snug but the Tapco locks in easier and faster. I have not tried all 11 steel mags yet.
I have no regrets and am happy I spent the $1K in 2014.

A true IMI Galil in 5.56 has been one of my grail guns for decades, but i wouldn't touch one of these cobbled-together Century contraptions, at anywhere near what they're asking. There are too many nicer AK's and AR's out there for this kind of money.

I bought a CAI Golani and apparently it was an early one.
The rear sight just flopped around, and was junk. But the worst feature was that there was no feed ramp of any kind. Not on the mags, not on the receiver or barrel. Only a random chance that a round might actually chamber into that steel wall with a hole in it.
I sold it at the same gun show where I bought it, for $150 less than I paid. The worst firearm I have ever bought, in terms of initial condition, and performance. I never knew if the thing was accurate, even hand-feeding ammo into it, because the sights were so loose and poorly made.

Owned the IMI Galil in 223 many years ago. It was cool looking. Like a real assault rifle with neat features. In spite of it, I found it too heavy, trigger slap was excessive, Israeli mags were hard to get and expensive, and accuracy was mediocre compared to the AR. Paid $700 and sold it for $1200 to a friend who had to have it. We were both happy. Haven't seen him for years. Wonder if he still has it...

I'm wondering if you're still friends

If this doesn't "talk" you out of getting some kind of "sheeple" gun, then you're hopeless;)

Good grief! An 8 year old thread... if the OP hasn't made his decision by now, oddball comments about "sheeple guns," whatever that's supposed to mean, won't help him.
