Talk to me about AR15 carry handles... is there a mid length version?

I got a mid length freedom PSA upper and build for my son and it's a flat top receiver with a FSB. I googled a thread on arfcom where the usual insults and pettiness and pretentiousness were in abundance but the upshot was that the wrong carry handle with the wrong FSB will be DISASTEROUS. Dogs and cats living together.... mass hysteria!!!

Will this work or not? The FSB is F marked.

It will work if you want a "retro" look, but it defeats the purpose of having a flat top receiver. Instead, get any kind of modern back up iron sight. The "carry handle" is hardly ever used for carrying anyway.

Precisely!

I want a flat-top upper like I want a hole in my head but that's all that's generally available.

The carrying handle was a consequence of the original AR design needing to raise the rear sight high enough so that people could see through the aperture. I prefer "iron sights" on all my guns since that's how I learned to shoot them and I am able to hit all the targets I have to hit within the environment where I use the guns. Iron sights have the added benefit of working after all the CR2032 coin cells have discharged. .

That should work fine. If it were me, I would get a Colt GI pull from Ebay.
Something like this:

They are also plentiful at gunshows, flea markets, surplus stores, etc. At least around here. The Colt has more positive adjustment clicks and stronger metals than most knock-offs.

I made the mistake of getting a UTG, one of the rail mounts broke off.

AFAIK all upper receivers are the same length, so yes it will work. I think that the carry handle rear sight can be as serviceable as any other, assuming the aperture size is correct. If you have the A2 front, you can adjust the post height to match the rear aperture height.

Just looking quickly at your link, I didn't see any specs on aperture size or click adjustment values. I think I'd want to know that before I bought it. I too bought a cheap Chinese made carry handle that I sometimes put on an M4orgery that I have. It works OK, other than the clicks are very mushy. If I had it to do over I'd get a better one.

It's not a carry handle. It's a rear sight base. I watched another recruit try and use it as a carry handle in Boot Camp. It was painful to watch the outcome.

"That's not your Daddy's shotgun, Private!"

I use one on my AR pistol. I cut the forward portion off and clamp it down with the one thumbscrew. It was cheap, GI spec, works, and it will not collapse or break like the smaller jointed ones.

When I had it on my 6.8 it would co witness with the red dot but I decided that the likelihood of my battery running down was in direct proportion to my negligence. If I thought it might be a problem hunting that day I changed the battery. Even a first gen Aimpoint will go 8 hours on a new N battery, And one of the requirements I have for the next red dot is to work off of a standard AA or AAA instead of an expensive lithium - so I can use rechargeables in it and carry a spare should I feel the need. Button cells are a logistical dead end.

Would love to see a picture of your modded rear sight.

It was a carry handle in 1973. It seems the Army and the Marines do not want the troops to use it for that, anymore. In a combat zone I can see that. Back on the block where the veterans live, it's a carry handle. Yes, you can mount a sight on it too.
